The cross or crucifix has been a common religious symbol for millennia. Though most consider it an icon of Jesus and Christianity, it was also used in pre-Christian times.
One example is the ankh, or crux ansata, which was associated with the ancient Egyptian god Osiris. According to the Encyclopoedia Britannica, 11th Edition, crosses of various types have been found throughout ancient Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Asia, and the South Pacific.
The cross exist in various forms. The crux quadrata, or Greek cross, looks like a plus sign. The crux commissa, or St. Anthony's Cross, takes the form of the Greek letter tau or a capital "T." The crux decussata or St. Andrew's cross looks like the letter "X." The ankh, discussed above, and the crux gammata or swastika are also considered forms of this emblem.
This drawing guide depicts a crux immissa, or Latin cross, which has been promoted as a symbol of Christian faith since the Roman emperor Constantine began professing a conversion to Christianity during the fourth century, creating a hybrid of Christianity and traditional religions of the region.

Some crosses are considered crucifixes. Crucifixes not only contain the shape of the cross but also the likeness of "Christ impaled." These are often seen in churches or on necklaces.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a 3D Cross
How to Draw a Great Looking 3D Cross for Kids, Beginners, and Adults - Step 1
1. Begin by drawing an upside-down letter "L." This begins the upper arm of the cross.

2. Draw an "L" shaped line beside the first. This completes the front of the upper arm and begins the top of the right arm.

3. Draw a backward "L" shaped line connected to the previous lines. This completes the outline of the cross's right arm.

4. Draw another backward "L" shaped line, beginning to outline the bottom of the cross.

5. Draw an upside-down "L" shaped line, completing the outline of the bottom arm and beginning the left arm.

7. Now, it is time to make the cross three-dimensional. draw an upside-down "L" shaped line connecting the top of the cross to the top of its left arm. This gives the upper arm a three-dimensional appearance.

8. Use three lines to enclose a trapezoid at the tip of the left arm, giving it a three-dimensional appearance.

9. Draw an "L" shaped line connecting the bottom of the left arm to the bottom of the cross, giving the bottom section a three-dimensional appearance.
Color Your 3D Cross Drawing
Color your 3-D cross. Notice in our example how the three-dimensional sides are darker than the front of the cross. This shadowing lends itself to the 3-D effect.
