Appearance

Ciel's Faustian contract displayed on his right eye.

Ciel is a short teenage boy with grayish[12] blue-black hair and rich peacock-blue eyes.[13] As described by his tailor, Nina Hopkins, Ciel has a "wonderfully proportioned body." His arms and legs are thin, his shoulders slim, and his waist narrow.[14] On the left side of his body is the mark of the "noble beast", which he was branded with during his time as a slave in a cult.[15] Around this time, his slave-traders also pierced his ears to attach a price tag.[16] Since then, he wears earrings.

Ciel typically dresses in a way that suits his noble standing, and he has an extensive wardrobe. He almost always wears a black eye-patch made of gauze[17] with a single cord over his right eye to hide the location of his Faustian contract with Sebastian Michaelis. When in disguise, he trades the black eye-patch for a white patch that resembles a transdermal patch, which is fastened over his ear with two cords.[18] [19]

Blue Phantomhive ring.

Ciel sports two rings. The one on his left thumb is an ornate silver piece that holds an emerald-cut deep-blue sapphire; it is a one-of-a-kind family heirloom that has been passed down for generations.[20] The one on his right hand is a gold signet ring in the form of the Phantomhive crest, which he uses to stamp the wax seal on documents. Upon his return, the ring was given to him by Angelina Dalles, who told him that it was the only ring that had not been destroyed in the fire that killed his parents.[21]

Personality

Ciel is a proud, shrewd boy whom Sebastian Michaelis commends for his "presence of mind" and "keen intuition."[22] A chess prodigy, he often navigates challenging situations by visualizing making chess moves, with Sebastian as his pawn.[23] [24] His paramount goal is to exact revenge on those who harmed him and his family, and he is willing to sacrifice his soul to accomplish it.[25]

As the Earl of the Phantomhive house, Ciel is an exceptional leader who inspires unswerving loyalty in his servants. Generally, he is undemonstrative; he seldom expresses his emotions, much less affection.[26] Nevertheless, he is genuinely concerned for the well-being of his loved ones. For instance, he once jumped in front of a bear to guard Elizabeth Midford,[27] and he also attempted to protect her from a horde of Bizarre Dolls.[28] Additionally, he is attentive to the needs of his servants; when he heard that they desired new items, he took them shopping and provided them with necessities.[29]

Moreover, Ciel is accustomed to luxury. He has difficulty in dressing himself and doing household chores.[30] He is loath to stay in a poor, relatively austere environment for long periods of time, considering such beneath his dignity and unfitting for an earl.[31]

As the Queen's Watchdog, Ciel works diligently and does not balk at resorting to morally dubious means in order to fulfill his missions; for instance, he was readily prepared to bribe Fred Abberline to gather more information, which he viewed as flexibility on his part.[32] He lies without compunction, particularly while he is undercover, and he is cynical and distrustful of the integrity of others.[33] Furthermore, he is merciless with his enemies; on numerous occasions, he had Sebastian slaughter them.[34]

As the executive chairman of the prosperous Funtom Corporation, Ciel possesses business acumen; he accurately assesses market trajectories and conditions, such as when he anticipated that demand for products tailored to women and children would only continue to grow, and applies his ingenuity and foresight to expand his enterprise.[35] With the Funtom Corporation, he is simultaneously striving for revenge and realizing his childhood dream, a move "Ciel Phantomhive" deems astute.[36] His greed has "no boundaries"; for instance, when he learned that a popular performer could double the sales of his new product, he immediately put up advertisements of her.[37]

Although Ciel is, for the most part, wise beyond his years, he can be childish. He is exceedingly competitive, and he overestimates his skills at times;[38] he is averse to draws, and he will not yield until a victor is declared.[39] Despite his weak constitution, he is a competent shooter; he always carries a gun to defend himself, and he keeps one under his pillow when he sleeps.[40] [41]

Ciel suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder due to his time as a slave in a cult. He occasionally has flashbacks of the incident and loses awareness of his surroundings.[42] [43]

Ciel is fond of sweets[44] and allergic to cats.[45] Like his mother, he has asthma.[46]

History

Newborn Ciel and "Ciel".

On December 14, 1875, Ciel Phantomhive was born to Vincent and Rachel Phantomhive—some minutes after his elder twin brother "Ciel". His aunt Angelina Dalles helped to deliver him and his twin.[47]

Ciel and "Ciel".

When Ciel was five, he developed asthma.[48] Due to his affliction and poor health, he often had to stay inside Phantomhive Manor while "Ciel" and his cousin Elizabeth Midford played outside with Angelina[49] or while his parents and brother went to boat tours. Ciel never had to be lonely though as "Ciel" usually kept him company: They would play together, most often chess,[50] eavesdrop on their father's meetings,[51] etc. They were also schooled together; only for the fencing lessons, Ciel had to sit and watch his brother train with their aunt Francis Midford.[52] After one such occasion, Ciel overheard Francis and Vincent talk about his suitability as "Ciel"'s spare.[53]

Over the years, Ciel's condition improved and he could join his family outside more often.[54]

Ciel runs in the hallway.

On the brothers' tenth birthday, he was running through the manor when he came across his dead mother, father, and dog. He called for help and ran into Tanaka, who urged the young boy to flee. Before he could say more, however, Tanaka was attacked from behind by an unseen assailant who then grabbed Ciel.[55]

Ciel and "Ciel" were then sold, and their kidnappers commented that the former is "rare" and worth more than two people. They were bought and Ciel was branded by their new owners, giving him the mark of a "noble beast." He cried that he was hurt, dirty, and homesick.

The twins' buyer initially treated them kindly, giving "Ciel" and Ciel a bath and treating them to a splendid feast, including game meat. Ciel, cheered by this turn of events, whispered to "Ciel" that he thinks they've been saved by "a really nice person." "Ciel", however, remained suspicious. They were both dressed and brought into a cathedral occupied by a cult. They declared that they wished to raise their king of corruption to a new level in power, and that "Ciel" and Ciel were lambs, pure and innocent souls, brought to fulfill that purpose by being defiled, as the devil supposedly desired unclean and tainted souls. Ciel and "Ciel" were then attacked and violated.[56]

He was then chained in a cage while masked adults looked on and remarked about what a splendid evening they will have. Ciel sadly wondered why no one was there to help him. One of the masked adults then placed "Ciel" on a table as a sacrifice, and he was stabbed while the rest looked on gleefully.[57]

Ciel and Sebastian negotiate.

Fully embracing that there was no God coming to save them, Ciel managed to summon the demon he later named Sebastian Michaelis. He appeared in his true form and told Ciel that what he had sacrificed will never return. Sebastian asked Ciel if he wanted to make a contract and have his wishes granted. Ciel declared that he wanted the power to take revenge on those who mistreated him. The cultists tried to stop him from talking, but Ciel and Sebastian forged their contract. Sebastian asked him where he wanted his seal, saying that the more visible it is, the stronger the contract is. Ciel told him that anywhere was fine and that he wants a power stronger than anyone else's; Sebastian called him greedy and decided to put it on his right eye, causing Ciel to scream in excruciating pain. He then commanded him to kill his attackers; Sebastian then burnt down the building. Finally, Ciel stated his absolute orders: Sebastian must protect and never betray him, to obey his orders no matter what, and never to lie to him.[58] [59]

Ciel visits his and his family's graves.

The first place they went after these events was to the Royal London Hospital where his aunt worked; he was reunited with Tanaka, and a carriage was arranged to bring him back to his manor. He and Sebastian viewed the ruined manor, then visited the graves of him and his parents. Sebastian left briefly, and when Ciel returned to him, he found the manor had been rebuilt by the demon. Ciel later took his place as the Earl of Phantomhive and the Queen's Watchdog.[60] He established Funtom Corporation in the same year,[61] fulfilling his childhood dream of opening a toy store in London.[62]

A year later, Ciel summoned Sebastian to his room, complaining of a wobbly tooth that was preventing him from eating his food properly. After examining it, Sebastian decided to forcibly take it out, much to Ciel's chagrin. Ciel attempted to protest the idea but Sebastian proceeded regardless, under the impression that he was doing his young master a favor. After the tooth's removal, Ciel threw an angry fit at Sebastian. Ever since he has been unwilling to allow Sebastian to check for cavities in his teeth when they start to wobble.[63]

Sebastian endeavored to recruit servants for Ciel. After successfully recruiting gardener Finnian and housemaid Mey-Rin while house steward Tanaka was on leave, Sebastian introduced Baldroy to Ciel as an American soldier who will be serving as chef, and explained to Ciel that having a chef in employment is necessary for prestige and for the restoration of the earldom. When Ciel pointed out that highly esteemed chefs are ordinarily French or Italian, Baldroy challenged him on such and stated that, as long as the food is edible, the taste of it is inconsequential. Ciel countered that he does not care who is cooking the dishes, but he expects the food to taste "first-class." He forbade Baldroy from adopting his battlefield method of burning everything to a cinder in the kitchen.[64]

Sebastian asserted that he did not recruit Baldroy on the basis of his culinary skills; rather, the Phantomhive Manor was in need of another senior staff to manage the other servants. Ciel ordered Sebastian to properly train Baldroy.[65] Several days later, Ciel summoned Sebastian to the Phantomhive Room.[66]

Ciel wakes up.

Ciel tells Baldroy to clean up the mess.

One night, intruders invaded Phantomhive Manor. Baldroy, Mey-Rin, and Finnian worked together to eliminate them. Baldroy personally eliminated two men outside Ciel's bedroom. Ciel stepped outside his bedroom, rebuked Baldroy for being loud, and, upon realizing that intruders were there to kill him "yet again," informed Baldroy that he must keep at least one of the intruders alive to make them confess who their employer is. Baldroy was speechless when Ciel stated that he would have the intruders pay a heavy price for disturbing his sleep. After telling Baldroy to clean up the mess by morning, Ciel returned to his bedroom.[67]

Sebastian and Baldroy then held a conversation outside Ciel's bedroom. As a final word, Sebastian instructed Baldroy to use the back staircase for servants the next time he goes upstairs, as letting guests see a servant running about was unacceptable. Baldroy complained about Sebastian's comment, and Ciel berated them both for being loud.[68]

Plot

Black Butler Arc

One morning Sebastian Michaelis, the Phantomhive butler, wakes Ciel and serves him an elegant breakfast. He dresses his master and informs him of his schedule for the day.[69] As the day progresses, Sebastian's meritorious skills as a fighter and servant are highlighted. Ciel tells his butler that they have received a call from Italy from Chlaus, who would arrive at six o'clock that day. Sebastian promises to provide hospitality.[70]

Afterward, Chlaus arrives, and Ciel asks for his usual goods. Chlaus hands over a "game," telling him it was difficult to obtain. Nevertheless, Ciel requests for another "game," saying that kids have a greed for games.[71]

Sebastian interrupts them and serves their evening meal. Things are progressing smoothly until Mey-Rin accidentally spills wine on the tablecloth.[72] Sebastian then pulls the stained tablecloth cleanly and swiftly from the table without disrupting the food and plates on it. Ciel tells Chlaus to ignore the tablecloth and continue eating leisurely. Chlaus praises Ciel's butler, and they enjoy some Japanese dessert.[73]

Later, Ciel and Sebastian go to London for a new cane, after Finnian broke the other one. The shopkeeper mistakes Sebastian as the owner of "Master's" cane, to Ciel's annoyance. Sebastian scares the shopkeeper with the cane, and then he pays him before departing from the shop with Ciel.[74]

When they arrive home, Ciel is shocked to find his manor and servants decorated with girly accessories. He discovers that his fiancée, Elizabeth Midford, is responsible for this. She wants a dance party despite Ciel's dismay.[75] Sebastian reminds him that he cannot afford to turn Elizabeth down coldly since she is the daughter of the Midford family and his future wife. He also remarks that she is the daughter of a marquess, therefore higher in social standing than a mere earl, which is Ciel's noble standing. Sebastian soon concludes that Ciel has no dancing experience (which is why he is reluctant to join Elizabeth in dancing) and offers to teach him the basics.[76]

After the dance lessons, Ciel comes out to greet Elizabeth. She is excited until she notices Ciel's blue ring. She snatches it, claiming he cares more about the ring than her feelings. Ciel demands that she returns it, and his fierceness makes her cry. Elizabeth throws the ring on the floor forcefully, and it shatters into pieces.[77] Ciel is horrified and attempts to slap Elizabeth, but Sebastian stops him. After calming down, Ciel picks up the shattered ring and tosses them out the window. He declares that he remains as the head of the Phantomhive family even without the ring. He then wipes Elizabeth's tears and dances with her.[78]

In his bedroom, Ciel absentmindedly reaches for his blue ring and remembers that it is gone. Sebastian remarks that the ring is actually very important to Ciel and that he had only put on an ostentatious show of throwing it away for Elizabeth. He puts his hand over Ciel's, and when he uncovers it, the repaired ring is on Ciel's thumb. Although Ciel is surprised by its return, he comments how the ring has witnessed the deaths of its masters—his grandfather and father. Irrefutably, he says, he would grow sick one day and pass away with the ring. Sebastian tucks him into bed, and Ciel orders him to stay by his side until he falls asleep.[79]

Later, Ciel is playing pool with the other Aristocrats of Evil. He promises that he would catch the "rat" soon since he received ingredients; that is, drugs, from Chlaus.[80] Ciel then retreats to his study where he is grabbed by an unseen attacker.[81]

Before long, the kidnapper is revealed to be the Italian drug dealer, Azzurro Vanel of the Ferro family. He binds and beats Ciel. Azzurro says that he hates the English because they are too submissive to the Queen. He asks Ciel to cooperate, but Ciel states that he refuses to conspire with a filthy "sewer rat." Azzurro demands to know the location of the drugs Chlaus obtained, threatening to kill Ciel's servants if not told, but Ciel simply laughs it off. Azzurro kicks Ciel and tells his snipers to kill Ciel's servants.[82]

Soon after, the snipers inform Azzurro via telephone that they have failed their assassination mission. Infuriated, Azzurro orders them to return at once, but the snipers begin to scream at an oncoming attack and their voices are cut off. Ciel chuckles, and he is kicked tumultuously by the outraged Azzurro as a result. Sebastian answers the phone, introducing himself as a member of the Phantomhive household, and announces that he will come for Ciel soon.[83]

Afterward, Sebastian arrives and attempts to hand over the ransom, but Azzurro has hidden men shoot him multiple times, inflicting seemingly fatal wounds. He boasts that he is the winner of the game. He then threatens to sell Ciel and removes his eyepatch. Ciel asks Sebastian how long he plans to continue to play dead. In response, Sebastian stands up and "returns" the bullets by throwing them back at the men and killing them.[84]

Sebastian and Ciel banter for a while, which distresses Azzurro greatly, and he threatens to shoot Ciel in the head. When Sebastian demurs from rescuing him immediately, Ciel asks Sebastian if he is daring to go against the Faustian contract. Sebastian answers in the negative, assuring him that that would be unthinkable. Ciel's right eye gleams with the contract's seal, and he orders Sebastian to save him. Azzurro impulsively shoots at Ciel, but he soon discovers that Ciel is still alive.[85] Sebastian appears behind Azzurro with the bullet he has shot and drops them into his pocket. He then sets Ciel down on a chair, releases his binds, and finishes Azzurro off.[86]

Afterward, Ciel and Sebastian return to the manor where the other servants greet them warmly. Sebastian asks for Ciel's forgiveness. He states guilty he has not finished the day's supper preparations.[87]

Sometime after the incident, Sebastian wakes Ciel up. Ciel tells him to accommodate the children he invited from Lord Barton's orphanage when they arrive the next day.[88] Sebastian prepares many treats; one of them is a diligently sculptured chocolate model of an earl, and Ciel secretly steals its head. He takes it back with him to his study where he snacks on it and eventually falls asleep. Sebastian later scolds him.[89]

Red Butler Arc

It is the social season in London, and Ciel has been invited to countless events of different varieties.[90] Ciel and Sebastian ride on a carriage to London and arrive at Ciel's London townhouse. They come in to find Lau, Angelina Dalles and her butler, Grelle Sutcliff, looting his house for tea. Ciel grumbles to himself that these are the people he least wanted to see. Sebastian apologizes for not accommodating them earlier since he has no idea guests were coming, and he prepares them tea. Ciel then discusses the Jack the Ripper case.[91] In order to get more information, they go see a London funeral director, Undertaker.[92]

They arrive at a dilapidated shop where Undertaker is.[93] Undertaker appears out of a coffin and informs them that the murdered prostitutes all had something in common. However, he asks for a compensation (which is a "first-rate laugh") before he plans to reveal that crucial details.[94] After Sebastian amuses him successfully, Undertaker reveals that all victims had their wombs removed. The culprit's work indicates that it has to be someone experienced in the medical field.[95]

During the carriage ride home, they speculate that anyone with medical training could be the murderer, and that the womb and organs were most likely removed for use in a black magic ritual. Sebastian jumps out of the moving carriage to go compile a list of potential suspects as ordered by Ciel.[96]

They arrive back at Ciel's townhouse late because Grelle traveled the wrong way. Sebastian has already returned home before them. He has made tea and finished all the preparations. The butler shows them a list of names that fits their descriptions,[97] and they discover that the only person who suits their criteria is the Viscount of Druitt, Aleister Chamber. Sebastian informs that on the 19th hour of today, the Viscount of Druitt will be hosting a party; therefore, tonight would be the most convenient time to go and investigate. Angelina uses her popularity to arrange invitations so they can all attend the party. Sebastian tells Ciel that he would not be attending using the name Phantomhive so he must use his chance properly.[98]

That evening, Angelina and Grelle attend the party as themselves, Ciel as a girl (respectively Madam Red's niece from the countryside), Sebastian as Ciel's home tutor, and Lau as Angelina's lover.[99] They enter the party in search for Aleister. Ciel and Sebastian go through great lengths to evade Elizabeth Midford so Ciel's identity will not be discovered, and in effect, tarnished.[100]

Soon after, Ciel encounters Aleister and the latter leads him to a room behind the curtains. Ciel precariously enters only to notice an abnormal, sweet fragrance in the air. He begins to grow dizzy, and his vision of the Viscount grows dimmer. He realizes that he has to escape; however, he is knocked unconscious by the drug.[101]

In a brief flashback, Sebastian is putting a corset on Ciel, who dramatically claims that his organs are coming out. Ciel then wakes up to find himself blindfolded and his limbs tied. He hears the Viscount's voice talking to a certain audience, announcing that Ciel is the item they have been anticipating. He allows them to keep Ciel in a cage, "play with her" as much as they please, use her in a ceremony, or parts of her could be sold according to what the customer prefers. Ciel concludes that this is an underground auction, and Aleister is responsible for the Jack the Ripper killings. A person removes his blindfold, and the bid for Ciel begins. However, Sebastian comes to rescue him, and they manage to escape before the arrival of the police.[102]

The following morning, the newspaper states that there has been another murder by the Jack the Ripper last night. Ciel is dumbfounded since Aleister Chamber didn't go anywhere last night. He tells Sebastian to organize another list of suspects since Aleister is obviously not Jack the Ripper.[103]

Later Angelina comes in while Ciel is working and offers to play a game of chess with him. As they begin playing chess, Ciel explains his relationship with Sebastian. Angelina replies that aside from being the Queen's Watchdog, he should have another way of living- a brighter way instead of pursuing revenge. Ciel corrects her, telling her that he does not wish for revenge for it is just a show of selfishness. He did this for himself as he wishes for those who betrayed the Phantomhive family to experience the same level of humiliation and suffering he did.[104] Ciel consecutively beats Angelina at chess forty-six times, and she remarks that she always loses to him at chess. He kisses her on the cheek goodnight, saying he had a happy time playing with her, and he retires for the night.[105] In Ciel's bedroom, Sebastian informs him of his findings and tells him to make a decision.[106]

Later, Ciel is disguised a pauper boy. Sebastian has accompanied him to a cluster of buildings. They are on guard outside the next murderer's target's room to await the arrival of Jack the Ripper.[107] They hear a scream from the prostitute's house, although they did not see anyone enter. They rush inside, and Sebastian stops Ciel from witnessing the murder. They quickly discover that Grelle is the murderer, and they come up with a feeble excuse for why they were there, despite unequivocally being covered in the prostitute's blood. Grelle soon reveals their true form as a Grim Reaper, and Angelina reveals herself as their partner in crime.[108]

Ciel says her name had been on the list of suspects, but no human could have committed the act. However, Grelle (being a Grim Reaper and a co-criminal) possessed the supernatural abilities that would allow access to the prostitute's room without Ciel and Sebastian knowing. Furthermore, they could quickly travel to the murder scene from the Viscount's party. Thus, both Angelina and Grelle had to act together as Jack the Ripper. An additional connection between all the prostitutes was that they had all had abortions at Angelina's hospital. The prostitute Sebastian and Ciel have been guarding was the last name on the list, yet unfortunately, they failed to secure her life.[109]

Angelina comments that it is sad he figured it out because now they cannot play chess together anymore. Grelle whips out their Death Scythe and attacks Ciel, which Sebastian is able to stop. Ciel takes off his eyepatch and orders Sebastian to capture them.[110] Sebastian removes his coat to protect Ciel from the rain, and he promises to make him hot milk when they return to the manor. Grelle then dives in between Sebastian and Ciel with their Death Scythe, and they and Sebastian battle.[111]

Slightly down the street, Ciel questions Angelina why she committed these murders. She brandishes a knife, calls herself "the hunted", and she states that there is only one path. He questions her again, but she says that he would not understand even if she told him the reason for her actions. She moves in to kill him, yelling it would be better if Ciel was never born, but then she hesitates. Sebastian, taking note of the attack, moves to kill her, but Ciel orders him to stop.[112]

When he does, Ciel notices how injured Sebastian is, and Grelle comments that Sebastian has great endurance because he went to save Ciel when one of his arms was useless. Grelle then orders Angelina to kill Ciel, and she says that she cannot. Grelle wonders about this, as she has already killed so many women, and says that if she does not kill, it would be her turn to be killed. Angelina refuses, and they stab her directly in the chest with their Death Scythe.[113] Grelle takes their leave, but Ciel orders Sebastian to take down Jack the Ripper. They then resume fighting. After a while, Sebastian gains the upper-hand and is about to kill Grelle with his own Death Scythe when William T. Spears, another Grim Reaper, appears.[114] William apologizes and drags Grelle away. Ciel is tired, and Sebastian suggests that they head home.[115]

At Angelina Dalles's funeral, Ciel arrives late, carrying a red dress. He walks to her casket, and he says that the white flowers and subdued clothes she was placed in do not suit her because only passionate red does. He presses his forehead against hers as red flower petals drift through the chapel at this time, much to the guests' surprise. Leaving the red dress there, Ciel tells his aunt to rest in peace.[116]

Outside, in the graveyard, Lau asks if Ciel told the Queen of Jack the Ripper's true identity, which Ciel responds that he found that to be unnecessary, as the Jack the Ripper killings had been stopped. Lau says this decision will cause him to "sink into the mud," because of his refusal to seek help. Ciel retaliates by saying Lau's opium and intoxicants dens, in time, will surely be closed by the police. Lau brushes this off, saying he can find a new business venture since his interest in England and in Ciel has not yet been exhausted.[117]

They part ways, and Ciel and Sebastian go to speak to Undertaker. Undertaker calls Ciel kind to give a nameless prostitute her own grave. However, Ciel denies this, because he had many opportunities to save this woman, but he placed catching the killer above saving her life. He admits he even let his own aunt die for the same reason. Undertaker asks if he feels regret, and Ciel says he does not because the killer is gone and Queen Victoria can be at ease. Undertaker remarks that he dislikes the Queen because she forces harsh tasks for the Earl to complete. Ciel replies that it is the karma his family has been burdened with, which he has inherited along with his ring. Undertaker comments the ring acts as a collar and soon departs, saying the Earl and his butler can stop by any time.[118]

Sebastian agrees that Ciel was kind, or else he would be a coward, because Ciel had a hidden gun, but he did not pull the trigger. He hesitated in killing Angelina, even when Sebastian insisted. Sebastian guesses this is because Ciel was too afraid. Ciel dismisses this claim, saying it was Sebastian's job to protect him, regardless of whether Ciel protected himself. Ciel says that since demons have no convictions or loyalties, Sebastian will protect him for the sake of a demon's principles and aesthetics.[119] Sebastian then asks why he was stopped from killing Angelina, and Ciel explains that she hesitated in killing him and lost sight of her next move. Ciel says he will not regret decisions that have allowed him to advance, and he orders Sebastian to never betray or leave him.[120]

One month after Angelina's the death, Ciel dreams of the incident that happened during a stormy night, where it took away all his hopes and dreams. He was face to face with Death when he saw a black crow fly over his head, and its gaze is filled with a mirage as it tells him the dead will never return to life. Sebastian comes to wake Ciel up, and he slowly awakens from his nightmare only to pull a gun on Sebastian's forehead, telling him not to touch him.[121]

Sebastian prepares him milk tea to soothe his nerves. He suggests against reading Edgar Allan Poe's works before nighttime but Ciel brushes it off, saying he will do as he pleases. Sebastian informs him that Francis and Elizabeth Midford are visiting this afternoon, and Ciel gets anxious over this, ordering Sebastian to quickly make preparations.[122] Soon after, the Midfords arrive in the morning, instead of in the afternoon as planned, which Ciel expected. He and Sebastian go out to greet them, and Francis comments that Ciel's and Sebastian's bangs are improperly long, and they should take after Tanaka. She imperiously grabs them both and combs their bangs back neatly. Distressed by Ciel's "lazing about" and Sebastian's "indecency," Francis decides to begin retraining, and they later end up at the stables. Upon seeing the splendid horses, Francis challenges Ciel to a hunting contest, and she taunts him by saying that hunting is too strenuous for the Earl since he has a small, skinny build, similar to a girl's. In response, Ciel orders Sebastian to begin the preparations.[123]

Elizabeth, Ciel, Sebastian, and Francis advance to the woods. Sebastian lays down the rules and sets the time limit at three hours. As soon as he allows them to begin, Francis runs off, and Ciel tries to get Elizabeth to hop down off of his horse. While she argues, Francis gets the first point, already shooting a bird. Ciel fishes out his gun and shoots a bird right by Elizabeth's ear to even out the score. This startles her, but he says he will not lose in a competition. He then tells Elizabeth to stay with Sebastian since it would be too dangerous.[124]

At the end of the competition, they are tied with hunting fifteen animals each. They go to eat lunch, and Francis states that she will not be appeased until a victor is declared. Ciel agrees, though noting that occasions whereby he agrees with her are rare. Sebastian arranges for another competition in the afternoon.[125]

While they are eating, a bear comes out of the woods and heads for Elizabeth. Ciel dives on top of her to protect her, and it appears that Francis was able to kill the bear before it could attack. Ciel concedes that he lost, since she killed the sixteenth animal, and she commends him for his bravery. She acknowledges him worthy of being her future son-in-law, and they decide to go home.[126]

Back at the manor, the servants reveal a surprise they have for Ciel- cake and decorations. Francis, who looks upset, says the servants beat her to it, as she had actually come today to wish Ciel a happy thirteenth birthday. Ciel provides a genuine smile and thanks everyone. Afterwards, they celebrate and admire the snow.[127] [128]

Indian Butler Arc

Ciel overhears Arthur Randall yelling to Fred Abberline that Ciel is a brat who stole the glory of catching Jack the Ripper. He, followed by his butler, approaches them and sarcastically apologizes for being such a brat. When they demand to know why he is here, Ciel answers that he has come to clean up the mess caused by the old pathetic hunting dog, that is, Randall.[129] He takes information on the Anglo-Indian assaults from them in order to review the case. He decides to make a move according to his methods, since he wants to return to his manor as soon as possible. They return the documents, with Sebastian stating he has already memorized them, and they depart.[130]

Sebastian and Ciel arrive at Lau's opium den, and Ciel comments that the place has an awful smell. Ciel explains the incident that involves East End, which Lau manages. After their meeting, they head to the stronghold of Indian people.[131] Ciel accidentally bumps into a man and the latter begins screaming for help, claiming that his ribs cracked. They are then surrounded by Indians, who demand that because Ciel is noble, he should pay them consolation money and hand over everything he has to them. Ciel orders Sebastian to dispose of them immediately.[132]

While Ciel and Sebastian are surrounded, a well-dressed Indian and his butler appear, and the duo side with the Indians. Sebastian and Agni fight for a while. During a pause in the fight, Ciel states that the Indians are the ones to blame since they picked a fight with them first. The prince asks the others if they had a reason to fight, and when they fail to present one, he reprimands them-stating that provoking fights without a reason is childish. He then orders Agni to side with the British, and Agni quickly takes out all of the Indians. The prince, Soma Asman Kadar, warns Ciel to not wander about, since East End is not suitable for kids, and he leaves with Agni.[133]

At the Ciel's London townhouse, they agree to wait to hear from Randall, as the perpetrators of the Anglo-Indian attacks may have been among the Indians from earlier. Soma and Agni arrive unexpectedly, and [134] Ciel demands why he has to house them. Soma remarks that he must shelter his benefactors who had saved him from the Indians.[135]

At breakfast, Ciel argues with Soma, asking how long he intends to stay at his house, and the latter responds by telling him that he will leave after his work is accomplished. Soma, reminded of his task, shows a sloppy drawing of a lady named Mina, a maidservant at his palace. Ciel asks if Sebastian can locate her with this picture, and the butler replies that he will try his best. Soma asks Ciel to be his guide in his search for Mina, but Ciel tells him that he has a scheduled day of lessons and work.[136] [137] Despite this, Soma continuously interrupts Ciel throughout the day.[138] At his fencing time, Ciel challenges Soma to a duel; if he wins, Soma must remain quiet and stay out of Ciel's way.[139]

Soma accepts the challenge, but when he is about to lose, Agni intervenes to protect his prince and injures Ciel's arm in the process.[140] As Sebastian examines Ciel's arm, Agni hastily apologizes; furthermore, Soma declares that he has technically won. To decide the actual victor, Sebastian and Agni duel for their respective masters. They are evenly matched, and Ciel is shocked that a human could be on par with a demon.[141] [142]

At dinner, Soma and Ciel discuss his problem. Soma incorrectly deduces that Ciel doesn't care about his suffering and grabs his shirt in fury. Ciel retorts evenly that there are some things that cannot return despite one's utmost efforts. He breaks free from Soma and leaves; alone, he softly repeats the very words he told Soma. Afterward, Ciel goes to sit with Soma, offering to play poker to keep him company. However, Soma turns him down because he is busy with his search for Mina, much to Ciel's chagrin.[143]

Sebastian goes to wake up Ciel, who is already awake, much to the former's surprise. Ciel says he felt irritated so he had trouble sleeping and comments that Soma and Agni stayed out all night. He begins to read the newspaper; the headline states another mysterious attack occurred—the coffeehouse in Piccadilly Circus is severely damaged.[144] They decide to wait until nighttime to investigate Soma and Agni, who seem to leave every night. Sebastian, Lau, and Ciel follow them, and it turns out that Agni and Soma are simply looking for Mina. Ciel comments that in this country, the best place to look for news of a person is by going to a club or a pub (which is what Agni and Soma are doing); so, they are not up to something insidious.[145]

They return to the manor; shortly after, Agni and Soma return as well. Close to two hours afterward, Agni leaves on his own, which Sebastian has expected. The butler informs the sleepy Ciel of his movements, and they are about to leave when Soma arrives, asking to come as well. Lau, Sebastian, Ciel, and Soma follow Agni, and they reach a building where their target has entered. Ciel explains that this is the home of Harold West Jeb, and he is involved in importing various goods.[146] They sneak onto his property, and Sebastian deals with the guard dogs. Lau calls them over; he has already knocked out the guard personnel by rendering them asleep with a special technique, much to Soma's and Ciel's surprise.[147]

Inside, they overhear Harold West talking to Agni, who seems distressed. Soma bursts in, grabs Agni, and demands to know where Mina is. Ciel, Sebastian, and Lau continue to hide because Harold would recognize their faces.[148] As West orders Agni to kick Soma out, in the hall Lau and Ciel speculate that this has to do with the black market. Therefore, Lau concludes that this case is in Ciel's jurisdiction. Ciel agrees and says that reporting to Scotland Yard would be problematic. Subsequently, Sebastian rescues Soma.[149] They all return to Ciel's London townhouse, and they discuss Agni's amazing powers. Soma destroys Ciel's tea set and loudly wonders why Agni betrayed him. He then flees to his room, where Ciel later enters to explain his situation and encourage Soma to be independent.[150] [151] [152]

Afterwards, he tries to leave with Sebastian to further discuss Harold West, but Soma chases after him. He comments that, compared to Ciel, he knows nothing of the world, is spoiled with given luxuries, and never tried to understand people. Ciel offers to help, and Soma hugs him joyfully.[153]

Ciel, Soma, and Sebastian meet up with Lau, and they deduce that Harold wants to win the Royal Warrant at the curry contest; so, he is using Agni.[154] Ciel decides to participate and obtain the Royal Warrant for the Funtom Corporation, even if they only have a week to prepare.[155] They conclude that their objective is to compete with Agni's legendary skill in curry-making.[156]

In just two days, Lau provides them with the finest selection of spices.[157] Sebastian tests the quality of his curries with Soma, and eventually discovers an extra ingredient to enhance the taste.[158]

Ciel, his servants, Lau and Ran-Mao all arrive at the curry competition.[159] West approaches them and exchanges pleasantries with Ciel. He arrogantly mentions that he will receive the Royal Warrant, and when West leaves, Ciel comments gleefully that he cannot wait to see his face when he loses.[160]

As the curry competition gets underway, Aleister Chamber is revealed to be one of the judges; Ciel concludes that he probably bribed his way out of jail. The chefs are introduced, and they soon begin cooking.[161] Soma claims they will lose the competition when he sees Sebastian rolling balls of dough. Confused, Lau and Ciel question this; Soma adds that Sebastian is making the naan in incorrectly.[162]

When the tasting commences, Agni's curry is highly praised whereas the judges are skeptical of Sebastian's curry doughnut. Once they taste it though, his curry is also well-received.[163] They open the curries up to the general public and declare the competition a tie. However, the trophy is taken from the judge by Queen Victoria's aide, as she rides up on a horse.[164] She declares Sebastian as the winner since he also has taken children into account in the preparation of his curry. When things are resolved between Soma and Agni, Ciel tells the Queen that someone like him should not be seen around her, but she denies this. She takes her leave after informing Ciel that she will have the Grand Chamberlain's office send the authorization documents for the Royal Warrant to Ciel soon.[165] [166]

Soma thanks Ciel for winning, and Ciel claims he did it for himself. Soma says that if he had never encountered Ciel, he would have stayed selfish and ignorant. Now, he will aim to learn many things and become a great man; however, Ciel dismisses that as mere talk. They admire the evening sun, and Soma suddenly hugs Ciel and bawls, crying for Mina. Ciel reprimands Soma to stop crying and act his age. He then notices that the Queen left a note for him in his pocket, which Sebastian comments he saw the Queen's servant put in when they were standing side by side silently. Inside the envelope are tickets to the Noah's Ark Circus.[167] [168]

Later at the manor, Soma bursts in Ciel's bedroom, bewildered by television.[169] Arthur Randall and Fred Abberline come to visit. Ciel is initially oblivious to the fact that Agni was attempting to confess and turn himself into the police. They all sit down and Randall hands Ciel his bribe money for working for the Queen.[170]

Agni bursts into the room, and Sebastian silences him. Soma then enters the room, and the investigators wonder who they are. Ciel introduces them as his "good friends" who are visiting him to learn more about English culture. Soma is pleased by Ciel's admittance that they are friends and hugs him joyfully. They then celebrate over champagne.[171] After the investigators leave, Ciel reprimands Agni for his actions, as it could have gotten him into trouble as well. Soma backs Ciel up, and orders Agni to not cause trouble for his friends or turn himself in. Ciel finally allows them to stay, but on the condition that Soma will work by managing his townhouse in London.[172]

Shortly thereafter, Ciel and Sebastian leave the Phantomhive Manor to go to London, with Sebastian stating that it is "wonderful weather for the circus." The servants bid their farewells, and Ciel leaves the manor in their hands.[173]

Circus Arc

In response to a letter from Queen Victoria concerning the disappearances of children and their coincidence with the presence of Noah's Ark Circus, Ciel and Sebastian Michaelis go to London to investigate. They intrude into the Scotland Yard department to gather some more information, and attempt to bribe Fred Abberline to keep him silent.[174] Then, they head over to Undertaker. After Ciel goes through great lengths to make him laugh, Undertaker informs them that since no corpses of the missing children have shown up, it is possible that they are still alive.[175]

Ciel and Sebastian then attend a circus show hosted by Noah's Ark Circus. Sebastian is invited onstage where he gets bitten by a tiger. Ciel tells him to go with Joker, who has approached him.[176] [177]

Back at the London townhouse, Ciel is irritated that Sebastian has signed him up for an entrance test to qualify for the circus. He snaps at Soma before going to his bedroom. He glumly accepts it, though, when Sebastian says that if Ciel is not there, he would get to live according to his own free will. Ciel says that he cannot perform, and Sebastian reassures him.[178] The next day Ciel introduces himself to the circus members as Finnian, a pageboy who had worked at the same place Sebastian had. He passes the entrance exam with Sebastian's help. Joker then names Ciel "Smile," much to his frustration.[179]

Later, Joker takes them on a tour of the tents, pointing out which ones are off-limits because they are the first-string members' tents. Afterward, while they are warming up, Sebastian tells Ciel that the children are not present and suggests they inspect the first-string members' tents, which are protected by Snake's poisonous snakes. Dagger then introduces them to Suit, who is actually William T. Spears. Ciel worries that Sebastian's true nature as a demon would be exposed, but Dagger luckily laughs it off. Before Ciel could give an order dealing with William, Dagger pulls him away to practice.[180] Ciel later meets Sebastian and William outside, informing them that Dagger is calling for them. He warns William to stop making them seem suspicious to the rest of the circus. They then agree to not interfere with each other.[181] Inside, Joker announces the room assignments; Sebastian is partnered with William, while Ciel is partnered with Freckles.[182]

At their tent, Ciel gets the bottom bunk. Freckles comments on his fancy upper-class English and offers him Funtom Corporation sweets.[183] Freckles wakes him up early the next morning. Ciel struggles with dressing himself, peeling potatoes, getting food, and performing.[184] Freckles then pulls him to the showers, and when Ciel is unwilling to bathe in public, Freckles forcefully strips him and sees the mark he got when he was a slave in a cult.[185] Ciel then runs away and hides. Sebastian comes to Ciel later and gives him a change of clothes. Ciel refuses to continue living humbly. They decide to do their best to hurry with the investigation.[186]

Later, Ciel sees a chance to investigate, but Sebastian is told to perform in the place of Wendy, so Ciel decides to investigate on his own. Sebastian deals with the poisonous snakes and heads off to do his show. Ciel then discovers a photo of the first-string members of the circus with an unknown man by a workhouse. Beast walks in to change her outfit, but Sebastian manages to hide Ciel in a trunk before he gets caught. Sebastian then comments on the photo, noting that the hallmark on the man's signet ring is the same on Beast's prosthetic leg. Ciel opts to search Joker's tent as well and tells Sebastian to head back to the show. In Joker's tent, he finds a letter from "Tom, the piper's son." He opens it and sees his own name, much to his shock. Then, he hears the other members returning and replaces the letter. He hides behind crates but is discovered by Doll.[187]

Unexpectedly, Doll helps him avoid detection from the other members. She then reveals that she is Freckles. Ciel pretends that he was just trying to steal from their tents and assures her that he did not actually steal anything, and Doll forgives him. They agree to keep it a secret, and when she leaves, he thinks to himself that humans have no scruples about lying.[188] He then goes to Sebastian and William's tent. Sebastian tells Ciel that he would protect Ciel's life, but if Ciel makes a mistake on his own accord, he might suffer a painful experience while alive. They go outside, and Ciel tells him about his findings. Soon after, Ciel vomits.[189] Doctor states that Ciel has had an asthma attack due to a cold.[190] When Ciel wakes up, he finds Doll sleeping with him. He calls for Sebastian to come and orders him to go the crest office and find out who owns the hallmark they saw in the photo.[191]

The next morning Sebastian brings Ciel back to the London townhouse. Sebastian then identifies the owner of the hallmark as Baron Kelvin. Ciel and Sebastian are about to head out, but Soma and Agni would not let them, as Ciel is ill. They then set out to nurse him in bed. Sebastian reassures him that they will do everything tomorrow.[192]

Ciel wakes up late, and when Sebastian tries to follow Soma's advice and fawn over him, Ciel is repulsed and orders him to stop. Sebastian then informs him that Tanaka has called and said that Elizabeth Midford is currently at Phantomhive Manor and she refuses to go home before seeing Ciel. Ciel tells Sebastian to get them to Kelvin's manor in an hour. He then fools Soma so that he may escape from the townhouse.[193]

They soon arrive at Kelvin's manor. Joker welcomes them inside.[194] While leading them to Kelvin, Joker remarks that it must be hard for Ciel to embody so many responsibilities and titles, and Ciel tells him that Joker, a servant, must not speak to him with casualness. Joker guides him to the dining hall for dinner. Kelvin makes his appearance and he is very excited about Ciel being there. Ciel and Sebastian note that the missing children are all here and they act like servants to Kelvin. Kelvin orders Joker to prepare a show for Ciel. The gruesome show includes children unwittingly killing themselves, much to Ciel's horror. He commands Sebastian to stop a child from being killed, and Sebastian verifies that the children there were kidnapped by Kelvin. Disgusted, Ciel insults Kelvin and pulls a gun on him; this causes Joker to lay a sword on Ciel, and Sebastian to put a knife against Joker. Kelvin orders Joker to put away his sword.[195]

Ciel then asks Kelvin for the whereabouts of the rest of the kidnapped children. Kelvin eagerly guides him to the basement. He reveals that he has remodeled the basement to resemble the cult Ciel was victimized in three years prior.[196] Kelvin then relays his story of how he was fascinated by Ciel ever since he met him years ago. He says that he is impressed by how Ciel has killed all the cultists there and escaped. He asks to be a part of it, saying that he has prepared the room of the ceremony, the sacrificial lambs (the kidnapped children), and that the last piece is Ciel. Ciel then shoots him. Kelvin cries that it is painful and begs to be killed like how the other cultists were killed. Ciel tells him to redirect his pleas to Sebastian. Joker, who has tried to interfere and got his arm cut off by Sebastian as a result, begs for Kelvin to be spared. When Joker admits that he is wrong for kidnapping the children for Kelvin, Ciel says that he is not wrong because he has fought for his own future. He adds that, however, on this day he has just stolen Joker's future. Joker then reveals that the other first-string members of the circus are on their way to the Phantomhive Manor to kill its inhabitants.[197] But, Ciel and Sebastian are unimpressed. Ciel declares that the Phantomhive servants are his private army; they protect the Phantomhive family's secrets and pride so they will not go down easily.[198] [199] [200]

Joker cries for his friends, but Ciel tells him that crying will not change a thing as the world is not kind to anyone. Doctor then comes in and reveals that he has made artificial limbs out of children's bones. He stabs a child, and Ciel is horrified by the traumatizing sight as it reminds him of the cult three years ago. Ciel then orders Sebastian to kill them all; Sebastian eliminates Doctor, finishes off Kelvin, and Joker dies of blood loss. He then tells Sebastian to burn the place, regardless of the children.[201]

Ciel and Sebastian step outside from the burning manor and encounter Doll. Ciel admits that he has killed Kelvin and Joker. Doll vows to not forgive him and attempts to stab him. Ciel then orders Sebastian to end her life.[202]

Sometime later, Ciel and Sebastian board a train. Sebastian questions why he has ordered for the children to be killed, and Ciel says that they would be happier in death as they cannot possibly recover from the trauma.[203] They then borrow a man's carriage to get to Renbourn Workhouse. Afterward, they go over the hill to get there. Once there, they discover that the workhouse is already in ruins, and that Kelvin was lying to Joker and the others the entire time. Ciel then bursts into a wild fit of laughter. He says that Joker and the others were desperately trying to protect something that did not even exist and they died for it. He continues to laugh, saying humans are nothing but evil creatures that are more devilish than real devils. He declares that he, too, is human and filled with the same "ugly contents" as them. Sebastian cheerfully agrees, as he states that that is why humans are interesting.[204]

Back at Phantomhive Manor, with Elizabeth's insistence, Ciel agrees to calling Nina Hopkins over to tailor their clothes. Nina performs various measurements on Ciel.[205] [206] Later, Nina tells Ciel and Elizabeth that it is time for fitting. When Nina does not find it satisfying, she rips the entire shirt off of Ciel. Ciel and Sebastian go through great lengths to keep Ciel's mark hidden from Elizabeth. Just when Elizabeth is about to leave, Soma and Agni barge in his bedroom. Sebastian swiftly dresses Ciel. Later, while Elizabeth and Soma converse, Ciel sleeps peacefully.[207]

Phantomhive Manor Murders Arc

When Charles Grey and Charles Phipps arrive at Phantomhive Manor, Grey attacks Baldroy and Mey-Rin upon entrance. Sebastian Michaelis intervenes in time to prevent Grey from stabbing Baldroy in the head.[208] He then lets them in to see Ciel. They announce that Queen Victoria wants Ciel to host a banquet and entertain a guest, which Ciel reluctantly agrees to do, since he wishes to regain the Queen's trust. Ciel then orders Sebastian to begin preparations and contact Lau and Undertaker.[209]

The day of the banquet arrives, and Ciel talks to Diedrich on the phone, who warns him not to overdo it. Sebastian informs Ciel that the guests have come, and Ciel notices that a storm is brewing.[210] After the guests have all gathered, Ciel goes to greet them. The guest of honor, Georg von Siemens, comes as well, and Ciel encourages them all to freely chat at the buffet. They then discuss business and commence introductions. Later, Ciel goes to sit with Arthur Conan Doyle and reveals that he is familiar with his work.[211]

When a drunk Georg throws a drink at Irene Diaz, Ciel steps in and takes the blow. After Sebastian accommodates the guests, he dries Ciel. They then insult Georg in French. Arthur notices this, and Ciel motions for him to hush. Later, when Georg passes out, Ciel orders Sebastian to take Georg to his room. He also announces that he will go to bed too.[212]

Later Ciel, escorted by Tanaka, goes to Georg's room, where the other guests have already gathered. He finds out that Georg has been killed. They decide to move Georg's corpse to the cellar. Lau points out that no one can leave the manor because there is a storm. Grey deduces that the killer must be one of them. They then speculate how the murder occurred. Afterward, each person states his or her alibi, and Ciel fails to have one because he was in his bedroom alone. Because the majority of the guests suspect Ciel as the murderer, they decide he must be watched by one of them. Arthur Conan Doyle is chosen to watch Ciel, and they are handcuffed together.[213] At this time, Sebastian makes arrangements with the other servants of the house, giving them instructions to last several days.[214] In the morning, Ciel wakes Arthur up, saying that Sebastian, strangely, has not come back. Instead, Tanaka comes, taking on Sebastian's position as the head butler. He, and the other guests, find Sebastian's corpse. Ciel, screaming wildly, commands for him to get up to no avail.[215]

The guests begin to discuss the grisly details of Sebastian's wounds. Finnian scolds them for doing so in front of Ciel. Sebastian is then moved to the basement with the other bodies. Ciel apologizes to his servants for losing his composure. He asks Tanaka to replace Sebastian temporarily as the head butler. Tanaka ushers Ciel to get a change of clothes and admonishes him, saying that he should not be shaken by something as "trivial" as the death of a servant, adding that Vincent Phantomhive had never once been agitated by these matters. Ciel notes that Tanaka is as strict as ever.[216]

Later, Ciel and the other guests dine together. They then notice Patrick Phelps' absence and go to Ciel's bedroom where he should be at. There, they discover Patrick's corpse.[217] When they find that Patrick has a strange wound, Arthur initially attributes it to a needle injecting poison. Ciel rebukes Lau and Ran-Mao for searching his room, and he secretly suspects Lau because of the needle Lau had used outside Harold West Jeb's estate some time ago. They figure out Patrick's time of death, and then gather together for dessert to discuss the chain of deaths. Ciel then points out the things that make Lau suspicious, but soon assures him that he knows fully well that Lau could not have killed all of the three victims even if he had teamed up with Sebastian. When Arthur proves the impossibility of just one person committing the string of murders, an uproar occurs between the guests. Karl Woodley wants to leave, but Ciel does not let him, so he attempts to attribute the murders to Ciel's doing as the Queen's Watchdog. Ciel orders Karl to sit down. Angered, Karl tries to punch him, but he is single-handedly suppressed by Tanaka.[218] Afterward, Ciel concludes that the only one who could not have been the criminal is Arthur. He then allows Arthur to be in charge of their actions from there on out.[219]

They soon decide to search Sebastian's corpse for the key to Ciel's room. Ciel, Arthur, Finnian, Baldroy, and Charles head down to the basement. When they cannot find it, they go to Sebastian's bedroom. Ciel curiously opens up the closet, and a multitude of cats that Sebastian had hidden rush out, eliciting Ciel's allergic reaction. Soon after, Ciel reveals that he does not know anything about Sebastian's past, just like the rest of them. They then decide to check everyone's luggage for the key, but they fail to find anything. The servants are determined to search outside, something Ciel cannot dissuade them from doing.[220] Later, Lau brings up the possibility of a thirteenth person being among them.[221]

Just then, the Phantomhive servants haul in the "thirteenth person," but Ciel quickly recognizes him as Jeremy Rathbone. Jeremy presents Sebastian's owl, and after reading the note attached to it, Ciel explains that Sebastian had anticipated that he would be killed and sent a letter to Jeremy. After justifying his arrival, Jeremy takes over the investigation and asks for the corpses to be put in three separate rooms.[222]

After Jeremy's request is carried out, Jeremy examines the corpses individually. He asks that they wait until nightfall, as well as for Ciel's cooperation, to catch Patrick's killer. When it is time to inspect Sebastian's body, Ciel staggers, claiming that seeing his butler's corpse so many times has a negative effect on him.[223] After dinner, Ciel has to lend his assistance to Jeremy, and he is required to take off his clothes and stay very still. Grey and Ran-Mao then team up to take down Patrick's killer under Jeremy's guidance.[224]

At Karl's bedroom, where Ciel (dressed in his butler's coat to hide his body odor) and the rest of the guests are waiting, Tanaka announces that they have successfully apprehended Patrick's killer. Jeremy reveals it to be a snake. Arthur explains that Ran-Mao, who has Ciel's clothes and thus his scent, attracted the snake. They then conclude that the snake must have been smuggled by Karl, who has close connections with an African business. Jeremy says that Georg initially feigned his death, but was truly killed later; therefore, alibis are invalid. They then discover an important evidence in Karl's fireplace that clues into Georg's death. Ciel declares that Karl's motive is success in the diamond market, and that he must have wanted to dispose of Ciel first. Grey then arrests Karl. Ciel and the rest of guests toast in celebration to the resolution to the case.[225]

The guests leave the next morning, but Arthur rushes back to the Phantomhive Manor, having figured out that Jeremy is actually Sebastian.[226] Ciel and Sebastian praise Arthur for his insightful deduction. Ciel tells him that Karl was not the criminal in this case. Sebastian then explains to Arthur what really happened with the murders, and in the process, reveals that Grey was the one who killed him and Georg.[227] Sebastian had cunningly set up everything to make Jeremy look more believable, and Ciel was forced to help with the act on numerous occasions. Arthur sums up the situation: Charles had tried to make Ciel out as the killer; Ciel and Sebastian made thorough preparations to clear any suspicion surrounding themselves, and even though they know that Grey is the killer, they made the innocent Karl into the culprit. Ciel explains that everything is the Queen's wish—her foremost objective was to get rid of Georg. He further says that since he had not ideally followed the Queen's order in his previous case, she tried to pin a murder on him, which he sees as her having a good sense of humor. He adds that he is good with games, however, and he used Karl, who sold illegal weapons, as his scapegoat. Ciel reinforces the idea that he is the Queen's Watchdog, and that this entire incident was nothing more than a game where the Queen reconfirmed whether or not he had the talent to maintain his position.[228]

To the bewildered Arthur, Sebastian reveals that he is a demon and forces Arthur to never tell. Arthur promises him and runs away in a panic. Afterward, Ciel asks Sebastian why he revealed his true form. Sebastian tells him that the eccentric experience will motivate Arthur to write, recalling that Ciel is fond of Arthur's novel.[229]

Sebastian then opts to start preparing for lunch. Ciel tells him to explain Patrick's murder. Sebastian reveals it was Snake, who he has captured. Snake is certain that Ciel has caused the first-string members of the Noah's Ark Circus to disappear, and therefore he wants to kill Ciel. Ciel then informs him that the first-string members were kidnappers of children. He lies that the first-string members have made their whereabouts unknown after discovering Ciel's intention of investigating them. He offers Snake a place at his manor and assures him that they would be looking for Joker and the others. Snake then accepts his offer. Later, Ciel warns Sebastian to keep silent about his lie and then asks him what he is planning to do with the Phantomhive servants.[230]

Afterward, Ciel, Elizabeth Midford, Soma Asman Kadar, Agni, Undertaker, and the Phantomhive servants prepare to bury the "dead" Sebastian. The bell in his grave rings suddenly. They dig up his coffin immediately and find, to their great relief, Sebastian alive. Sebastian tells Ciel that he is glad the rest of them were fooled. Tanaka then returns the badge of the Phantomhive head butler to Sebastian. Sebastian then promises Ciel that he is completely devoted to his service.[231]

Luxury Liner Arc

Sebastian Michaelis tells the household they will be adding another member to the staff. Snake will be working as a footman, and Sebastian asks them all to get along.[232]

At breakfast, Ciel questions Sebastian about Snake's progress. Sebastian replies that it will take some time to train him.[233] Ciel is confident that Sebastian can handle it; however, Sebastian teases Ciel, stating he was unable to teach him how to dance properly. Ciel then reads in the newspaper how the Karnstein Hospital has found a way to bring people back to life. Lau arrives, and after their slight banter, he tells Ciel all the details. Later on, as Ciel watches Lau leave from the top window, he softly says that reviving the dead is extremely foolish.[234]

Next, Elizabeth Midford arrives[235] and joyfully asks Ciel to join her and her family on April 17th for a three-week vacation on a luxury cruise liner, the Campania. Ciel politely declines, and Elizabeth leaves disheartened. Ciel smiles gently as he watches her leave. Sebastian unexpectedly returns and teasingly asks Ciel what he's grinning about.[236] Ciel immediately Sebastian's report about the hospital's illegal experiments. After describing the hospital's illicit activities, Sebastian tells him the director, Rian Stoker, is part of an underground organization called the Aurora Society. Their next meeting will be aboard a luxury cruise liner on April 19th. Stunned, Ciel immediately asks for its name; Sebastian replies the Campania. A few weeks later, Ciel boards the ship with Sebastian and Snake and leaves the other servants in charge of the manor.

Ciel startles Elizabeth's parents and her brother Edward Midford by his unexpected appearance. Nevertheless, Elizabeth is overjoyed that he decided to "surprise" them and come on the trip.[237] Alexis Leon Midford also over-affectionately hugs Ciel, addressing him as his "future son."[238] Elizabeth immediately announces that Ciel must spend this enjoyable time with her.

Three days later at a party, an annoyed Ciel complains inwardly about the directionless and meaningless lives of the English aristocracy.[239] Sebastian suddenly informs him that the "signal" for the Aurora Society's meeting has been given—it will definitely take place tonight. Ciel instructs Sebastian not to let the "signal" out of his sight.[240]

Afterwards, Ciel consoles Snake who is feeling uncomfortable amidst the English gentry. Ciel states that Snake is another person; therefore, it is fine if he is different from the rest. Furthermore, Snake should follow his lead and feel free to be whoever he wants.[241]

Suddenly Sebastian returns, and Ciel goes with him. He instructs Snake to "clean up"; they'll be following their suspect.[242] At the door of the Aurora Society's meeting room, Sebastian and Ciel pause for a bit. Sebastian informs Ciel of the club's "fixed greeting"; he may have to perform it to prove he is a member.[243] After hearing what it is, Ciel cringes, appalled by what he has to do.

In the club room, Ciel and Sebastian encounter one of the members and do the "Phoenix Pose." Realizing they are legitimate, the man gives both of them membership badges.[244] Immediately afterwards, they hear a familiar laugh; both of them whirl around and are face to face with Undertaker. He laughs uproariously about "Earl Phantomhive's pose." When they question him, he says he will answer them if they can pay his "fee." Unexpectedly, Aleister Chamber also appears before them.[245] After his usual behavior, he questions Ciel if they have met before.[246] Awkwardly, Ciel denies it, and the Viscount does not press the matter any further. Meanwhile, Undertaker has disappeared; Viscount Druitt then excitedly tells Sebastian and Ciel to get ready because the meeting is starting.[247]

Ciel and Sebastian both watch Rian Stoker seemingly bring a woman back to life. They are shocked when they see her suddenly bite the man next to her. Pandemonium and confusion follows as the corpse moves wildly. While Sebastian defends Ciel, he stabs her through the heart. However, when she rises again, he states that she is a being he does not understand.[248]

Suddenly, Ronald Knox bursts in and uses his death scythe to smash her head. He tells Sebastian and Ciel that this is the only way to defeat it, and they should pay attention to the important stuff.[249] After destroying the corpse, he asks Sebastian if he is the rumored "Sebas-chan"; Sebastian retorts that he has an aversion to that nickname.[250] Ciel deduces that they will force Stoker to spit out how he is doing this. Rian, however, immediately attacks Sebastian—he states that everyone will blame him for this situation if he lets a demon go free; that will lead to serious overtime.[251] While Sebastian holds off Knox, Ciel states he will go on ahead—when Sebastian is done playing, he should follow him.

Ciel proceeds through the ship and runs into Elizabeth, who states she was following him after he ran away from the dining hall. He tells her to go back since it is dangerous, and he cannot worry about her right now. In the storage compartment below, Ciel is startled to discover Snake. Snake explains that he came here to share some cake with his snakes. Elizabeth suddenly shows up again, explaining that she wanted Ciel to try the strawberry cake that he likes so much.[252] She looks down at her plate and is surprised to see that the cake slice is missing. Suddenly, a corpse roars right behind her, jolting all three of them. Ciel protectively grabs Elizabeth and shoots the corpse. He instructs Snake to protect Elizabeth; he will handle the corpse. Snake does not respond as he stares straight ahead. When Ciel yells at Snake to get his attention, Snake points straight ahead—he states Oscar says the compartment is full of corpses.[253]

Ciel tells Elizabeth and Snake to run. Horrified, they all dash away as the corpses start coming towards them.[254] When there is no way out, Ciel shouts at Snake to take Elizabeth on top of the piled up luggage—he will hold off the corpses. After assisting Elizabeth, Snake offers his hand to "Smile" and pulls him up. On top of the luggage, they discuss the situation. Snake states that Webster says their poison isn't affecting them at all—plus, they are exuding a horrible smell.[255] He also deduces that they do not have any sign of feeling pain because they are not afraid of the snakes. Furthermore, the corpses lack intelligence; otherwise, they would have headed upstairs for more "food." Ciel decides to ascertain if they possess any hearing; Snake states Emily is telling them to throw the plate.[256] Once they try this, however, they conclude that they corpses don't have any hearing, so they will not be able to divert their attention to escape. Some of the corpses then start crawling up the luggage. Ciel hugs a frightened Elizabeth, declaring that no matter what happens, he will protect her at least. He desperately wonders why Sebastian's "playtime" is taking so long.[28]

Suddenly, the corpses fly through the air. Sebastian states that Ciel is so admirable—that's how an English gentleman should be. Sebastian proceeds to dispatch the corpses in the fastest way possible—wildly and madly, he moves effortlessly through the compartment, destroying all the corpses. As Ciel watches him and observes the "splattering crimson," he thinks that Sebastian is like a "dancing demon." Furthermore, it immediately reminds him of that day—the day he made a contract with a contract with Sebastian. However, this time, he realizes he's outside the cage. He thinks inwardly that "Ciel" is not here anymore—only Earl Phantomhive exists.[257]

Suddenly, Elizabeth interrupts his train of thought. Finished, Sebastian holds out his bloodstained gloved hands to Ciel to help him down. Ciel angrily orders him not to touch him with his "filthy hands." Sebastian changes them at once and then assists Ciel and Elizabeth down. As Ciel steps in the blood, he tells Sebastian he behaved just like a beast. Sebastian smiles and replies that it was an emergency. Ciel tells him they need to find out why there is such a huge quantity on this ship. Sebastian unexpectedly throws his knives towards a frightened Rian and states they should interrogate him. Ciel questions Rian; he then reveals that their troubles are not over—the front freight storage has ten times the amount of "living corpses."[258]

Ciel immediately orders Sebastian to get his aunt and the others to safety. He says they will catch up because they will slow him down anyway. After Sebastian leaves, Ciel turns his attention back to Rian—he instructs him to be brief because he is not patient and points his gun at Rian's head. Rian informs him that he has a machine in his room that can shut the corpses down permanently. When he hesitates in cooperating further, Ciel tartly answers that he reckons Rian wants him to "pierce his ears." Rian then hurriedly tells him that an American company called Osiris bought his company, which is the reason why they were transporting the dolls in such a large quantity.[259]

Ciel, Snake, Elizabeth, and Rian start moving towards his room. Once they enter the turbine engine room, Ciel instructs Snake to remove his snakes' hold on Rian, so they will appear as Rian's comrades. One of the engineers suddenly calls out to them; they all do the Phoenix pose to prove that they are one party. Afterwards, a concerned Elizabeth asks a flustered Ciel if he is all right.[260]

After they leave this area, they enter the second boiler room. Suddenly, a great shockwave reverberates throughout the entire room. Water starts pouring in, and the ship's workers yell at everyone to get escape before the watertight doors shut.[261] Rian escapes from Ciel and Snake. Snake follows him, but Ciel turns back to help Elizabeth. The doors rapidly shut before they can get out. Ciel orders a desperate Snake to get to safety and then go after Rian. He adds that they will escape through the air duct above; furthermore, Snake has to get out because his snakes cannot survive in the cold water. Agreeing with him, Snake throws Keats into the duct from his side and tells "Smile" that it will guide him and Elizabeth through the ducts. Ciel responds that they will definitely meet up later.

Ciel then directs his attention to Elizabeth. He tells her to remove her dress because it is preventing her from moving easily through the water. With tears in her eyes, she states that she does not want Ciel to see her in such an "uncute" way. He angrily grabs her dress and rips it, yelling that if she dies, she will never be able to wear the clothes she loves so much ever again—it is all over when she dies.[262] Stunned by his outburst, Elizabeth quietly apologizes for being stubborn, and Ciel softly apologizes for being rough—when they get back, he will ask Nina Hopkins to make her some new dresses. Suddenly, Ciel starts coughing and tells Elizabeth to start climbing.

When they reach the Campania's 2nd Class restaurant, Ciel cannot get the air duct to open. He suddenly falls through it as it unexpectedly gives way; however, instead of feeling pain from the fall, he realizes he is in Sebastian's arms.[263] Sebastian helps down Elizabeth and Ciel asks him about his aunt. Sebastian assures him that they were unharmed when he left them. Sebastian offers Ciel his tailcoat, but Ciel refuses to wear it because it is too long. Sebastian is about to ask him about his cough, but Ciel silences him with one meaningful statement. Sebastian tells both of them they must hurry to the lifeboats.

Suddenly Ronald Knox and Grelle Sutcliff burst through the roof.[264] Grelle wickedly smiles and tells "Sebas-chan" it must be fate that they are meeting here again. Guarding Ciel and Elizabeth, Sebastian replies that it is just a coincidence.[265] While Grelle continues with their speech, Sebastian tries to escape with the two; however, he is forced to hold onto both of them as he avoids Grelle's Death Scythe.[266] Sebastian asks Grelle to let them pass—if they refuse, he will be compelled to use force. Elizabeth asks about Grelle's identity; Sebastian answers that they are just a pervert and requests that she stay back because he is afraid that it may be contagious.[267]

Ciel and Elizabeth watch their fight. However, Grelle's Death Scythe suddenly cuts through a porthole, and water rushes into the room. Elizabeth and Ciel are forcefully hit by the cold water and get washed away.[268] As Ciel slowly rises, he sees the corpses are about to attack an unconscious Elizabeth. He tries to reach her himself, but his leg is caught. Screaming at her to get up, he keeps firing his gun at the corpses. Sebastian also is unable to go to her aid because he is fending off attacks from both Ronald and Grelle. Elizabeth slowly awakens as the corpse close in around her. Gazing sorrowfully at Ciel, she states she wanted him to think of her as cute until the end. Being unable to reach her, Sebastian and Ciel watch horrified as the corpses attack her.[269]

Shocked, Ciel watches speechlessly as Elizabeth uses two swords to cut through the corpses attacking them.[270] Elizabeth cries that she did not want Ciel to see her like this. She stabs two corpses behind Ciel, and her tears fall onto Ciel's astounded face. She declares that this time she will protect him. Turning her back to Ciel, she faces the corpses, announcing that she is the daughter of the leader of the British knights and the wife of the Queen's Watchdog.

After cutting down all the corpses, Elizabeth directs her sword at Grelle, proclaiming that it is fine if she is not cute as long as she can protect Ciel. Sebastian, however, asks her to stop—bowing to her, he apologizes that he has failed as a butler because she had to go through so much trouble.[271] He will handle everything now. Jarred, Ciel watches everything, but then orders Sebastian to forget them and go after Rian Stoker. After consulting one another, Grelle and Ronald also depart.

Ciel tells Sebastian they must hurry, but his leg is injured. Elizabeth immediately offers to carry him on her back. Surprised, Sebastian tells her that he can manage that. Awkwardly, Elizabeth asks Ciel if he will still accept her as his wife. Ciel replies that he wants a strong wife now. Relieved, Elizabeth asks him if this means that he does not hate her. Ciel is about to answer negatively; however, exceedingly embarrassed after catching sight of Sebastian's laughing face, he stops and tells her they do not have time for this.[272]

Snake rushes in and apologizes about Rian's escape. Ciel lets it pass and states they should meet up with his family. Upstairs, Ciel, Elizabeth, and Sebastian, and Snake meet Edward. Ciel apologizes for being completely useless. He also asks Edward to let Snake take his place on the lifeboat because he has to go back. Alarmed, Elizabeth is about to insist that she will accompany him when Sebastian quickly knocks her out. Ciel tells Edward he is leaving Snake and Elizabeth with him. As Ciel is being carried away by Sebastian, Edward calls out to him not to come back alive because he does not want to give his sister to him. Smiling proudly and confidently, Ciel promises that he will definitely return.[273]

Sebastian and Ciel encounter Viscount Druitt in the 1st Class Passenger Hallway. Although he questions how they have recognized him, he soon realizes that they are members of the Aurora Society after they do the Phoenix pose.[274] After delivering a pompous speech, he tells they are fortunate to witness the coming of a new dawn thanks to medicine. Sebastian and Ciel see that his men are carrying Rian's device—although Sebastian suggests killing him now, Ciel replies that they cannot since they do not know how the device works.[275] Undertaker also unexpectedly appears, and they all descend to the 1st Class Passenger Lounge. Sebastian then asks the Viscount if he is planning to activate the device now. Druitt replies that he cannot do that since the "cast" is incomplete. Rian suddenly rushes out—from atop the staircase, he accuses the Viscount of stealing the device. Grelle and Ronald also arrive; when they are about to attack, the Viscount threatens to pour wine over the device and destroy it. Ronald immediately restrains an infuriated Grelle. During this entire scene, Ciel and Sebastian silently watch. Sebastian then asks Ciel if he can kill Aleister; Ciel quietly responds that he understands Sebastian's feelings, but he should wait.[276]

Suddenly, countless corpses burst into the room, and Druitt refuses to stop them until they all address him as "Caesar." This time, Ciel tells Sebastian to kill Druitt, but Sebastian responds that he understands, but they must wait.[277] Although all four of them (Ciel, Sebastian, Grelle, and Ronald) are thinking they want to kill Viscount Druitt, they collectively do the Phoenix Pose, so he will activate the machine.[278]

However, when he activates it, the device doesn't start. Rian immediately yells at the Viscount that he lied to him about inventing the device. From atop the staircase, Grelle instantly jumps down. Slashing their way through multiple corpses, they reach Aleister. Just when they are about to kill him, Undertaker stops his attack. All four of them are astounded as Undertaker speaks—he says that losing such an amusing man would be like losing the entire world.[279] He proceeds to fight Grelle and succeeds in hurling Grelle into the roof, smashing it in the process. Sebastian protects Ciel as shattered glass falls everywhere.[280] Everyone watches amazed as Undertaker reveals that he is also a Grim Reaper.

Jolted, Ciel concludes that Undertaker is the actual mastermind behind the Aurora Society.[281] Undertaker replies that he wanted it to stay a secret, but he would like to repay Ciel for doing the Phoenix Pose. Undertaker then explains his entire plan. When he is showing the others the Cinematic Records, Ciel annoyed asks everyone what is happening since he is unable to see them.[282] Finally, after Undertaker's complete explanation of his "Bizarre Dolls", Ciel asks him how perverse he can be.[283] Undertaker retorts that Ciel cannot understand the doll's beauty because he is too young. Ciel remarks disgustedly that Undertaker makes him sick.[284] Undertaker laughs and says in addition to his own research, the dolls have the potential to be the best weapons—that's why they are profitable.[285]

Grelle suddenly declares that it is impossible to let Undertaker go after all the crimes he has committed. When Ronald and Grelle attack Undertaker, Sebastian unexpectedly intervenes. Ciel announces that it is their duty to present this culprit and the truth to the Queen.[286] Sebastian, Ronald, and Grelle decide that the victor will get the spoils. Undertaker gleefully laughs as they all attack him together.

Ciel watches them fight, destroying parts of the room in the process. However, Undertaker suddenly gets the upper hand when he easily jumps to the top of the staircase and grabs Ciel. Holding a horrified Ciel, he softly tells him he can finally place the Earl in one of his specially made coffins. Alarmed, Sebastian rushes towards them, attacking Undertaker with his demon powers. Undertaker suddenly throws Ciel off of the staircase, shocking Sebastian. As he reaches for Ciel's outstretched hand, their fingers barely touch before Undertaker impales Sebastian from behind-revealing his Cinematic Record. Ciel screams Sebastian's name as Sebastian loses consciousness.[287] Ciel desperately screams Sebastian's name again and again. Regaining consciousness, with blood flowing out of his mouth, Sebastian agonizingly roars—with all his strength, he clasps Ciel's outstretched hand.[288]

Sebastian tightly holds onto Ciel as they both fall to the floor. Undertaker remarks that he knew Sebastian would protect the Earl no matter what. Ciel frantically tries to wake Sebastian, even noting Sebastian's blood on his hands. Sebastian slowly opens his eyes; he states Ciel is so loud—he can hear him perfectly. Sebastian gets up, spitting blood, shocking Ciel. Undertaker comments that Sebastian's Record was interesting, but in the end, all he does is make Ciel miserable. Raising his Death Scythe, Undertaker announces that he has decided to make Sebastian disappear after all.[289]

Suddenly, everyone feels a tremendous shudder resonate throughout the entire ship.[290] Ciel grabs onto Sebastian as the ship starts to tilt. As Sebastian barely holds onto a metal bar with Ciel tightly clasped in his other arm, Grelle appears. Ciel indignantly watches Grelle state that Sebastian can just sit there and watch—he will be taking Undertaker since they have no time left. Looking at Sebastian, Ronald states that he will finish off the "weaker one." Ciel retorts that he will not allow Ronald to belittle his butler. That joke is not even funny—it is impossible for his butler to be weakened or defeated by him. Ciel asks Sebastian if he is right, and Sebastian agrees wholeheartedly.[291]

Suddenly, Sebastian grimaces in pain from his previous injury, alerting Ciel. Looking at him, Ronald states that he does not want to "pick on the weak." Unexpectedly, Sebastian lashes out at him with multiple attacks. Sebastian informs a stunned Ronald Knox that he cannot defy his master's orders.[292]

After defeating Ronald, Ciel is beside a victorious Sebastian (who has gotten Ronald's Death Scythe). Ciel tells an astounded Grelle that it is really old-fashioned for a Grim Reaper to rely solely on his death scythe.[293] Suddenly, cold water starts pouring in, and Undertaker announces that this is goodbye.[294] Nevertheless, Grelle and Sebastian (carrying Ciel in his arms) rush at Undertaker for one final attack. He dodges them both, but Ciel catches the chain with Undertaker's mourning hair lockets.[295] Surprised at first by the sudden turn of events, Undertaker then smiles, stating he will entrust them to Ciel—they are his treasure. Ciel cries out at him to wait, but Undertaker assures him that they will meet again as he uses his Death Scythe to split the ship in two.[296]

Sebastian immediately puts Ciel in a life preserver, surprising Ciel. Before he can protest, Sebastian asks for his forgiveness, but they have no time—he unexpectedly hurls Ciel into the water. Ciel cannot bear the freezing cold water; unable to stay alert, he sinks into the water. When Sebastian grabs his collar and puts him into to the lifeboat. He also offers Ciel his overcoat so he can try and stay warm.[297] Furthermore, he smilingly asks Ciel to bear it for a while because he does not have any hot tea to offer him.

A shivering Ciel and Sebastian both see people drowning a little ahead of them; Sebastian states they should move their boat further away otherwise they will be swamped.[298] Ciel is about to fall asleep, but Sebastian yells at him not to. As he is reaching out his hand to Ciel to shake him awake, a Bizarre Doll bites Sebastian's leg, jolting both of them. After killing it, Sebastian quickly places his hand over Ciel's mouth, silencing him. Sebastian softly comments that the sea is full of Bizarre Dolls—Ciel is the only survivor left in the water. As the dolls swim towards them, Ciel urgently tells Sebastian to get in. Sebastian does, and then, starts destroying the dolls. Ciel realizes that he cannot escape because he may endanger the survivors in the other lifeboats. He asks Sebastian if he can defeat them all. Sebastian smiles and says that Ciel does not need to ask—he just needs to order him.[299]

Ciel loudly issues his order to eradicate the Bizarre Dolls.[300] Sebastian answers affirmatively and viciously destroys all the dolls. After he is done, a blood-covered Sebastian stands wordlessly in the boat. Sitting on the boat's floor, Ciel gasps in awe and asks if it is over. Sebastian suddenly falls to the floor in pain. Placing his hand over his deep wounds, he states sorrowfully that even a Death Scythe's attacks are hard on him.[301] Ciel silently gazes at him; then, looking at the lockets, he wonders aloud about Undertaker's motives. Sebastian comments that he believes that Undertaker did not want to harm Ciel; nonetheless, he hopes they never meet again.

Looking at Sebastian, Ciel remarks that he has never seen him like this. Sebastian apologizes, stating he knows he has failed as a Phantomhive butler. They are both silent as a rescue ship approaches. Ciel then says he cannot let Sebastian stay like this—when they get back, Sebastian must have a thorough rest because he did well today. Shocked by his words, Sebastian asks him to refrain from saying such things because he does not want to see a storm after this.[302]

Several days later, Ciel has completely recuperated; he also discovers that Elizabeth is currently in the manor and intends to celebrate Easter together with him, Sebastian, Baldroy, Mey-Rin, Finnian, Snake, Edward, Soma and Agni.[303] Additionally, Nina Hopkins arrives at the manor to dress Ciel up in her new spring collection. Elizabeth excitedly suggests that they should start the egg hunt immediately with the special Easter eggs her father made. She eagerly shows off one particular egg to Ciel, asking him whether the flower pattern is nostalgic. Unsure of how to respond, Ciel hastily agrees and turns, stating that he will inform the servants to conceal the eggs.[304]

Elizabeth is left dumbfounded at this response. However, she quickly recovers and announces she thought of a great idea; whoever is able to find the egg that she specially made will become the winner of the competition. She hugs him tightly, claiming he always finds her Easter egg first, and therefore must ensure that he comes first this year too, to which he uneasily promises her he will. Edward interrupts and declares in frustration that he will not let Ciel have his sister's Easter egg. Ciel attempts to protest when Charles Grey suddenly crashes through one of the windows. Afterward, Charles Phipps appears at the window and gives his greetings to Ciel. Astonished, the latter inquires as to why Queen Victoria's butlers are here; Phipps replies they are here to deliver something from Her Majesty and hands over a basket of intricately decorated eggs. As Elizabeth praises the handicraft, Grey announces that he would like to join the competition, too.[305]

For the Easter egg hunt, Sebastian arranges everyone into pairs; Ciel forms a pair with him. Elizabeth then officially starts the competition.[306] While they are searching, they hear the sound of a loud explosion and rush into the hall, to find Baldroy and Mey-Rin looking completely disheveled. Baldroy remarks that he had forgotten he hid some specially made eggs there, to which Sebastian is puzzled as to why he would do such a thing. This disqualifies the duo; Sebastian and Ciel continue to seek hidden Easter eggs.[307]

Ciel is ambushed by Soma and Agni, who attempt to snatch away his egg. The former feigns an asthma attack, which worries everyone greatly. However, when Soma rushes up to him, Ciel takes advantage of his lowered defences and breaks his egg. Ciel mocks Soma for falling for a trick like that and smugly asserts that he will take any measure to win. Soma and Agni are thus disqualified; nonetheless, they do not hesitate to spring upon Ciel, crying in relief that he is not ill. They wish Ciel and Sebastian luck for the remainder of the competition.[308]

They venture into another room, with Ciel musing that Elizabeth would not have placed her egg in a challenging place. He is shocked to see the egg perched on a chandelier and wonders how she managed to get it up there. He orders Sebastian to steady a stepladder for him, whilst he endeavors to retrieve the egg. They are suddenly attacked by Grey, who is warded off by Sebastian. Ciel manages to catch the falling egg in the commotion and hangs on tightly to the chandelier.[309] During the ensuing battle, Ciel notices Sebastian hesitating to attack Grey due to his noble status and grants him permission to break their egg since this was a game; nevertheless, the latter refuses. He is dangerously close to letting go of the chandelier and Grey nearly breaks their raw egg when, out of the blue, Grey and Phipps' egg hatches, revealing a baby chick. It turns out their egg was fertilized and had been mixed in with the other eggs. This disqualifies the two, leaving Ciel and Sebastian the victor of the competition.[310]

After the competition is over, everyone regroups outside for some snacks and Ciel presents Elizabeth's egg to her. Elizabeth is overjoyed that he got it first, after all, and wishes that this Easter egg may bring him happiness. He thanks her for the gesture.[311] At the dining table, Grey and Phipps deliver a "love letter" from Queen Victoria to Ciel.[312]

Public School Arc

Queen Victoria informs Ciel that students at Weston College have been refusing to return home and asks him to investigate. Because Weston is a school for the nobility, Ciel decides it would be best to infiltrate it himself. He orders Sebastian to figure out his own way in. To open up a spot in the school, they do something to a student named Colett to make him no longer able to attend.[313]

On his first day, Ciel is almost late, but he manages to slip inside the gate before it is closed. He notes that first impressions are important and that he must be careful. But he then steps on the lawn, a disrespectful action, which instantly catches everyone's attention. The P4 arrive, and Edgar Redmond sees Ciel standing on the grass. He storms over and Ciel thinks he is going to hit him. But instead, he grabs Ciel tie (which was crooked) and straightens it. Ciel introduces himself to them. Lawrence Bluewer informs him about the rule (which is to stay off the lawn), and Edgar cheerfully tells him to be more careful from then on.[314] McMillan then pats Ciel on the back for stepping on the grass and not being punished. He introduces himself as another first-year student in Blue House. Ciel asks him what a "Y" is and McMillan explains to him how the penalties (Y's) work and about the prefects. The bell begins to ring, and the two hurry off to class.[315]

In class, Ciel and McMillan are discussing how he got in when Clayton arrives and makes everyone line up. Because he is last, Ciel has to polish the prefects' shoes. When he's done, he goes to his welcoming party, which consists of Clayton shoving him onto a sheet which the other boys use to launch Ciel into the air. Before they can do it twice, the dorm supervisor walks in and stops it. The dorm supervisor then introduces himself as Professor Michaelis.[316]

Later, Ciel is summoned to the headmaster's office. There the Perfect Four speak to Ciel—he has to obey the rules, follow tradition, and maintain discipline at all times. Johann Agares, the vice headmaster, gives Ciel the welcome speech in the headmaster's stead. Afterwards, the P4 say that tradition is absolute—they will do whatever it takes to maintain order in school subdue trouble. Finally, Ciel swears that he will abide by their rules. Johann comically falls off of his seat, and when he gets up, he tells Ciel to sign the contract. When everyone's leaving, Ciel asks to meet with the headmaster. The P4 tell him that only they are permitted to meet with the headmaster.[317]

Ciel starts his daily schedule at school. One day during lunch, McMillan tells him about "fags," who are like little brothers to the prefects. Furthermore, they have the honor of going to the "Midnight Tea Party" with the headmaster and the prefects. Ciel realizes this would be the prime opportunity to meet the headmaster.[318] Out loud, Ciel mentions that he would find it difficult to play against his friend from the Scarlet Fox dormitory, Derrick Arden.[319] Suddenly, all the students sitting at tables around them start whispering. Hurriedly, McMillan tells Ciel that the dormitories have really intense rivalries. Ciel scoffs, comparing said rivalry to the trivial rivalry of women. Clayton then approaches Ciel and assigns him to clean the dining hall. Ciel breezily states he will be able to handle it.[320]

When the hall is empty, Ciel immediately summons Sebastian. He instructs him to clean up while he heads to the Scarlet Fox dormitory to investigate. However, at Scarlet Fox's dormitory, the boys pelt Ciel with small stones, and he is forced to flee.[321] Ciel concludes that the only way to get access to the P4 is to garner their favor. When Ciel returns to the dining hall, Clayton playfully grabs him, asserting that he does not usually do this, but Ciel did a magnificent job cleaning the dining hall. Ciel thinks that Sebastian overdid it, but he accepts Clayton's praise.[322] He plans to use Lawrence's fag to get closer to the P4.

Ciel instructs Sebastian to complete all of his fag assignments. With Sebastian handling everything and Ciel taking all of the credit, everyone is astounded by Ciel's efficiency. McMillan, one day, remarks on how amazing Ciel is. Ciel confidently replies that he has a trick to do everything.[323] Furthermore, he will definitely become Clayton's fag. Later in the day, Ciel is talking with McMillan when a young boy comes running and tells him that Maurice Cole wants to talk with him. Several boys stand near Ciel as Ciel converse with Maurice. Maurice brightly tells Ciel that the P4 are requesting his presence at 4PM the next day at Swan Gazebo. Ciel agrees to the invitation; once he leaves, the other boys congratulate Ciel.[324]

That night, Ciel goes to meet Sebastian aka Professor Michaelis in his room. Sebastian and Ciel discuss the situation. Ciel explains how he has been invited by the P4 and adds that this is a golden opportunity—he will win the P4 over with sweets. He orders Sebastian to bake the best tea cakes ever. Sebastian bows and answers affirmatively. However, an unexpected knock at the door forces them to reverse roles—Ciel happily leaves as the boy comes in, thanking Professor Michaelis for his help.[325]

The next day, however, Ciel is stupefied when Edward Midford, Herman Greenhill's fag accuses him of being two hours late—the invitation was for 2PM. Ciel realizes that Maurice tricked him. Edward furiously tells Ciel to get out—he was an idiot to trust him. Alone with Sebastian, Ciel wrings his hair, saying he was an idiot to believe in verbal promises. Sebastian smiles, asking Ciel if he is going to cry because of this minor setback. Ciel smirks and declares he will make Maurice Cole regret ruining his hard work.[326]

Although the other boys start ostracizing Ciel because of his behavior towards the P4, Sebastian and Ciel lay out their plan—they will separately observe Maurice's movements to uncover his methods. Ciel asserts that he's sure Maurice's dirty because of his unhesitant, relaxed attitude. Sebastian responds that Ciel can recognize his own kind. Slightly piqued, Ciel tells Sebastian to also seek out anyone else who may have been deceived by Maurice.

After investigating, Sebastian informs Ciel that four other boys have been tricked by Maurice.[327] They realize they will need someone to infiltrate Scarlet Fox to get hard evidence. They wonder who they can use to accomplish this task. Simultaneously, they both think of Soma Asman Kadar. Ciel frustratingly states he does not want to call him. However, Sebastian states he is an indispensable pawn for their plan to succeed.

At night, McMillan talks with Ciel. Ciel explains that Maurice tricked him; McMillan is upset, but then realizes he and the other boys who heard what Maurice said can testify. Nevertheless, Ciel reassures him that everything will be all right.[328]

The next day, with great fanfare, Soma arrives, majestically riding on an elephant. Although Ciel tries to ignore him, Soma laughingly gets his elephant to lift Ciel into his boxed seat. Ciel angrily tells Soma he told Soma to act like they don't know each other.[329] Afterwards, Ciel explains his problem to Soma. He had a fight with Maurice, and he doesn't know how to make up. Soma proclaims that as Ciel's best friend he will definitely help him.[330]

At night, Sebastian and Ciel meet with Soma. Although he is startled to see Sebastian (he thought servants couldn't accompany their masters), he brushes it off and tells them everything he has learned.[331] Maurice has two quirks—one, he gives flower-shaped cards to some of the boys. The second revelation, however, shocks Ciel and Sebastian. Ciel announces that they will settle everything tomorrow.

The next day, in the 3rd art room, Ciel confronts Maurice. Although Ciel succeeds in uncovering everything, Maurice seemingly gets the upper hand by making his lackeys catch Ciel and start hitting him. Nevertheless, this is all according to Ciel's plan—he has already used Sebastian to set up giant speakerphones so the P4 can hear their entire confrontation. Furthermore, all according to Ciel's plan, Herman, Lawrence, and Edward come to rescue him. Ciel also further humiliates Maurice by making Sebastian shower photos of Maurice putting on makeup—the true secret to his flawless beauty. After Maurice is apprehended, the boys compliment Ciel on his bravery. Ciel responds that he can't stand others being deceived. Moreover, he is always against injustice. Outside the window, bat-like, Sebastian silently watches the entire scene.[332]

Clayton makes Ciel his fag.[333] Later on, he complains to Sebastian that he feels like an "opera singer." He has now concluded that Gregory Violet will have the most information about Derrick Arden; he just has to figure out a way to get close to him.[334]

The next day at Swan Gazebo, Ciel is present at the P4's meeting. While Gregory sketches charcoal drawings (Ciel notes that each one is nothing like the model), they discuss June 4th's main event-the Inter-Dormitories Cricket Tournament. Everyone's families will be in attendance; however, this causes Lawrence great distress because he has three older and four younger sisters. Edward thankfully states that his sister, Elizabeth, is comparatively graceful and tame. Recalling Elizabeth's strength, Ciel wonders what Edward is talking about. Furthermore, Edward purposely tells Ciel that Elizabeth will definitely be coming to support her only brother.[335]

After everyone settles down, Ciel notes that Gregory never really drew Herman, his original model, at all. He then casually mentions his "friend," Derrick Arden. Although the fags talk about him normally, the P4 become unusually tense.[336] Furthermore, the P4 all give different answers regarding his "speciality."[337] Ciel wonders what the P4 may be hiding. Later, while he's helping Edward with some light cricket practice, he asks him about the other absentee boys. Edward replies he doesn't know; when Ciel is leaving, he unexpectedly grabs his hand and asks him if this has anything to do with his job as the Queen's Watchdog. Ciel smiles and leaves without answering him.[338]

In Latin class, Sebastian leaves a note for Ciel to meet him later. Ciel goes to the Sapphire Owl dormitory's library at night to meet Sebastian. Sebastian suddenly grabs Ciel and clamps his hand over his mouth, startling him. Lawrence suddenly comes in, and Professor Michaelis kindly asks him if he can help him with something. Lawrence declines assistance and leaves. Sebastian then helps Ciel out of his robes—he apologizes for being rough, but he knew Ciel was being followed. After comparing notes, Ciel decides that they will take action tonight. Sebastian admonishes him that he will get "2 Y's" for walking around at night. Ciel replies that he has nothing to fear as long as he's with a "teacher." At Violet Wolf dormitory, Ciel starts a fire by hurling a lighted torch through a window. He reminds Sebastian of Rule #87—now all they have to do is wait for Derrick and the other boys to come out.[339]

When the fire starts spreading, Sebastian suddenly grabs Ciel, and they both continue to observe from atop a tree.[340] As the students start pouring out, Ciel tells Sebastian to keep an eye out for Derrick and the other boys. However, Sebastian uses his demonic powers and concludes that there are no souls left in the building.[341] Ciel sighs and then tells Sebastian to help put out the fire. Professor Michaelis shocks all the students by bringing Soma's elephant to help put out the fire.[342] Students from other dormitories also come to help. Gregory suddenly scream—no one should go into Violet House. Soma shouts back that Gregory cannot protect with his "worthless pride." Gregory then concedes and allows everyone to help. Separately, Ciel and Sebastian observe the whole scene.[343]

The next day, Clayton talks to Ciel about the cricket tournament. Clayton tells Ciel that Ciel was chosen because of his brains and guts which will be valuable to the team. Furthermore, each year one exceptional player in the cricket tournament can get invited to the "Midnight Tea Party." Ciel realizes that there is a way for him to meet the headmaster.[344] Finally, Clayton tells him that Professor Michaelis recommended him—he should thank him for his glowing praise. Ciel thinks that Sebastian is really dependable at times like this—aloud, he tells Clayton he wants to thank Professor Michaelis right away.

Ciel runs happily to Professor Michaelis and thanks him for his support. Professor Michaelis replies that he will be happy to help him with the details. Both of them thinks along the same lines—they know there is no clear standard for the special player's selection. However, Ciel believes if he can make points, bring victory to his dorm, and make everyone shed tears, it will assure him the final prize.

On June 3rd, the night before the big game, all the dorms hold a grand party, each once arriving in the main hall with great fanfare. Sebastian quietly laughs when Ciel enters with his team "God Only Knows", and they receive an awkward reaction from the guests.[345] Once the P4 light the torches, Sebastian and Ciel watch as Johann Agares declares 1889's Inter-Dormitory Cricket Tournament open.

When the party commences, Lawrence's sisters swamp Ciel. Nevertheless, Elizabeth quickly silences them all with her presence. Afterwards, Ciel is shocked when he discovers that Edgar is the Aleister Chamber's nephew. Furthermore, although Sebastian does his best to remain unnoticed, Francis Midford recognizes him. After their slight banter, she realizes that they are both here on the Queen's business. Edward comments that he did not recognize Sebastian at all, stunning Ciel. Sebastian asks them all to keep their secrets.[346] Elizabeth's father, Alexis Leon Midford, then announces that he hopes to see another "Miracle of the Sapphires." After he narrates the entire story, Ciel cannot believe that his predecessor was in Blue House. Alexis tells Ciel he possesses the blood of a genius game maker—it is sure to be an exciting match.[347] Ciel watches as Sebastian "handles" the drawing for the "fair and impartial" dorm matchups for the game.[348] The game between Scarlet Fox and Sapphire Owl begins.

As the game progresses, Ciel notes what a good cricket player Soma is. When the score is Blue 21-Red 80, they take a break. Ciel plans to discuss their team's strategy, but their "coach" has "disappeared." Although the other players are worried, Ciel tells them to leave it to him.[349] At the end of the meeting, Professor Michaelis returns and apologizes—he was in the bathroom.

Ciel then faces Joanne Harcourt. Joanne, a spin bowler, tries his best to defeat Ciel, but Ciel resolutely defends the wicket. Moreover, batting is not their only counterattack—members of Team Red are suddenly overcome by acute gastricular discomfort. (Sebastian worked as a waiter during the break and fed Team Red laxative-filled meat pies). Team Red forfeits the match, and Team Blue is declared the victor.

After Gregory's team's defeat, Team Blue faces Team Green. Ciel says they should win for Red House as well.[350] Professor Michaelis, as their coach, decides to cheer them on as well.[351] When the game begins, Professor Michaelis asks the music students (who are acting as Team Blue's cheerleaders) to play the "Radetzky March."[352] A few days ago when Ciel and his teammates are strategizing for the game, Ciel suggests using music to act as a signal to effectively hit the ball—they don't have to look at the ball, but the need to hear the music's precise cue.

Presently, through Professor Michaelis' carefully timed cues, Team Blue succeeds. However, Edward figures out the trick and comes out to bowl. When he bowls out the player using Violet House's "Purple Burnout," Ciel is shocked.[353] Suddenly, Sebastian sees the headmaster sitting in the stands. He hands over the reins to McMillan and rushes toward him. Ciel realizes what Sebastian is doing—if they can catch the headmaster, the case will be solved once and for all.[354]

Ciel continues the game with his teammates. He announces that he will be fighting from here on out. He uses "that" strategy (Lau's girls) to distract Team Green's boys. Ciel notes wickedly it has an even greater impact on Herman. Furthermore, the Blue House boys are all near-sighted, so they don't notice anything. Ciel realizes that Sebastian who suggesting this plan earlier really knows all about human desires. However, Maurice informs on Lau, and this strategy is nullified.[355]

Ciel, nevertheless, is undaunted—they will proceed with their second strategy-protecting the wicket with the bat.[356] Ciel tells Lawrence they will be able to hold their ground with this technique "the Sword in the Stone."[357] Ciel then steps up to bowl. After Ciel's bowling style is exposed, everyone claims it's dirty, unfair, and unbefitting an Englishman. However, Herman Greenhill silences everyone when he grabs Ciel's bruised and worn-out hand. He declares that Ciel's hard work and efforts demonstrate his commitment to his team and his pure desire to defeat Green House—he may be small, but "the owl came to hunt the lion in earnest."[358]

When the score is Blue 105-Green 91, Edward steps up to bat. Ciel knows that they need two more outs to secure victory. However, when he bowls, Edward manages to hit a six. Ciel acknowledges that he knew his technique would not work against him.[359] Lawrence then gently pats Ciel on the head and tells him to leave the rest to him. On the ball he bowls, he uses specific trajectory calculations to ensure Edward's defeat. Lawrence, however, understands that his technique will not work against his friend and fellow Prefect—Herman.

Herman uses his massive strength and scores a boundary, shocking Ciel. With the score Blue 105-Green 103, Lawrence starts to feel dejected. Nevertheless, Ciel smiles and places the ball in his hands. He tells him to bowl with all of his strength—the entire team feels that even if they lose, they will have no regrets.[360]

In the final play, Ciel as the wicket-keeper gets hit on the forehead by Herman's bat. Alarmed, Herman rushes to his side, but Ciel keeps his nerves together, grabs the ball, and hits the ball with the wicket. Ciel cries out the umpire; although he is jolted by the events, the umpire immediately declares Blue House's victory. Blue House energetically celebrates with an elated Ciel as their hero. However, Professor Michaelis catches him, stating their first priority is medical attention. Ciel joyfully replies that he's so happy, he can forget about the pain. Amidst the cheering students, Sebastian holds Ciel, softly saying he's really a bad child.[361]

In the medical office, Ciel loudly complains as Sebastian dresses his wound—painful things are painful no matter what. Sebastian smiles and says that everything went according to plan, but Ciel received a much nicer "medal." Plus, he also recovered the rigged ball that Lawrence used it the final play. Holding it, Ciel remarks he can't understand why Lawrence would throw a ball when he knew would lose. Sebastian replies that that is just the way humans are. Sebastian then apologizes—the headmaster got away from him. Shocked, Ciel orders Sebastian to make him something sweet to eat. Sebastian shows him the dessert he has already prepared—unfortunately, he smiles, Ciel will have to eat it later. Suddenly, Blue House's members pour in and congratulate Ciel. McMillan tells Ciel to get ready at once for the victory boat parade.[362]

Sebastian gives Ciel a new, slim fitting outfit for the parade. He tells Ciel he made it because Ciel said that he would win. During the boat parade, Ciel looks at the smiling Queen and thinks he will definitely present the truth to her. However, when they are about to salute, Lawrence Bluewer tells him a startling truth—they never thought they would win, so they never practiced the boat ride. The boat tips over and all the Blue House boys topple into the river. All the spectators, including Professor Michaelis, laugh good-naturedly.[363]

During the party, Ciel is surrounded by his carefree and playful friends (Elizabeth, Soma, and McMillan). Sebastian also observes all the guests as they mingle. When Ciel returns to his room, an invitation for the Midnight Tea Party is on his bed. He realizes ecstatically that this is his chance to meet the headmaster.

At midnight, Ciel arrives at the given location. Edgar, Lawrence, Herman, and Gregory welcome him to the "elegant, traditional, high class, and bizarre Midnight Tea Party." However, once the party starts, Ciel interrupts everyone—he tells the headmaster he cannot celebrate because something is worrying him. He cannot rest until he has met with Derrick Arden or his friends. Lawrence immediately states that he is being rude. Ciel retorts with the 15th rule. After revealing the reasons for his suspicions, Ciel demands to see him. Vice headmaster Johann Agares says that he is right here.[364]

Derrick, however, turns out to be a Bizarre Doll who viciously bites Herman on the arm. Ciel immediately summons Sebastian[365] and orders him to capture Derrick. Amidst everyone's shocks and screams, Sebastian whisks the tablecloth off the table and uses it to subdue Derrick. Sebastian then proceeds to help Edward with Herman's arm.[366]

Ciel tells the astonished group that he came to this school at someone's request to investigate the missing boys—Professor Michaelis is actually his butler Sebastian. Ciel announces that this proves that the boys are already dead and whips out his gun. He points it at the headmaster and asks him to tell the truth.[367] When everyone is about to protest about Ciel's sudden change in behavior, Edward unexpectedly speaks up—they all should not interfere with Earl Phantomhive.[368] Furthermore, the other fags are dumbfounded as the P4 confess to their crime-killing Derrick Arden. Sebastian, however, concludes that everything was fairly straightforward until the headmaster shrouded everything in mystery. Although the P4 protest that the headmaster had nothing to do with it, the headmaster suddenly speaks. It was so entertaining to watch their struggles, and they provided him with the finest of laughs. Sebastian tells the headmaster to drop the act—Sebastian then draws his arm in front of Ciel as Undertaker reveals himself.[369]

Ciel is shocked to see Undertaker. Undertaker laughingly asks Ciel if he is enjoying his first time in group life. Sebastian states he was wondering where he went after the Campania incident and he closed his shop. He adds that he can't believe that Undertaker took a job at a school.[370] Sebastian then turns to the P4; he asks them what was so important that they would resort to murder. After the P4's tell their complete story, Lawrence turns to a speechless Ciel, asserting that he knows Ciel can understand what they did was right. Undertaker bursts out laughing; Sebastian smiles and says it's rare for them to agree on something.[371] Ciel thinks to himself that the difference between education and brainwashing is paper thin.[372] Aloud, he tells the P4 that he will explain the circumstances to the concerned parties; Sebastian smiles when he hears this.

Ciel then directs his attention to Undertaker, questioning him about his motives. Undertaker replies that he will tell him since he has been paid his fee. He states that he has discovered that even the dead can evolve. They have their dreams of the future; this compels them to move forward. Ciel demands to know what he plans to achieve by bringing the dead back to life. Undertaker answers that he wants to know what comes after the predetermined end. As Ciel starts, Sebastian holds onto his arm. Undertaker adds that there might be interesting developments lurking behind the "end credits." Sebastian then interrupts that this where they disagree—because death is such a hopeless and definite end, that is why it is beautiful. After hearing Sebastian's response, Undertaker is silent. Undertaker then announces that he will be taking his leave now; Ciel declares that he won't let him get away again.[373] He orders Sebastian to capture him, but Vice headmaster Johann Agares comes to Undertaker's defense. Sebastian comments that he knew it—Johann is also a Bizarre Doll. Undertaker proclaims that Johann is his masterpiece. Derrick's friends suddenly surround the other boys; Ciel yells at everyone to get out of the garden.[374] Undertaker watches as Ciel helps a terrified Joanne get out. He smiles, thinking he is different from his ancestors.

When Sebastian rushes to his defense, Ciel immediately yells at Sebastian, telling him he ordered him not to let Undertaker get away. Sebastian replies that as per the contract, protecting Ciel's life is his top priority.[375] As he smashes one of the doll's skulls, he adds that he cultivated it, so he will not be robbed of it. Simultaneously, Ciel notices a wobbly Joanne behind him—Sebastian explains that he had to knock him out so he could fight easily.[376]

After Sebastian has defeated all the Bizarre Dolls, Edward suddenly burst back into the garden. He tells Ciel that everyone else has been evacuated. Ciel cautions him to watch his step—they are all done here as well.[377] Edward then tells Ciel how scared he is—in a year, he may have become like the P4, believing that there is justice in murder. Ciel smiles and states that as long as Edward thinks like that, he is still normal, adding "unlike himself" under his breath.

Ciel reports the entire story to the Queen himself. He adds that he knows that it's hard to believe, but she replies that she doesn't doubt him at all. After his meeting, Ciel and Sebastian head home. Sebastian states that Ciel worked hard. Ciel answers that he wants to go home and eat sweets. Sebastian then offers him McMillan's letter. Ciel responds that he won't be returning to "that cramped miniature garden ever again."[378]

At the mansion, Sebastian and Ciel find the servants occupied with some loose sheep. Ciel unexpectedly laughs—he tells Sebastian to handle the situation and then make some tea.

Life returns to normal at the Phantomhive Manor. One morning as Sebastian is assisting Ciel, Soma bursts into his bedroom, demanding to know why he has left school. Ciel replies that he is welcome to stay, but Soma responds that he learned everything they are teaching when he was a young child. Sebastian and Ciel are left speechless after hearing this. Agni also comes in, and Sebastian casually comments that he just saw him last at Weston College, secretly protecting Soma. Infuriated that Agni went against his orders, Soma loudly complains to an upset Agni. Ciel and Sebastian use this opportunity to leave. Ciel tells them they will be leaving the mansion in their capable hands.[379]

Ciel and Sebastian then take the four servants to London. Ciel travels from store to store getting the things they want and need. At Daunt Book Store, Ciel buys a historical novel by Arthur Conan Doyle, surprising Sebastian. Ciel adds that it would be a good way to kill time.[380] Afterwards Sebastian takes the group to the Somerset House—he wanted to take a closer look at Undertaker's mourning chain.[381] Several names come up, but none of them have anything in common. Ciel suddenly recognizes one of the names as his grandmother's. Astounded, they both wonder what kind of ties Undertaker has to the Phantomhives. Finally, at Harrod's Stores, they all see Funtom's new line of ladies products. Sebastian tells Ciel that it is good that he chose to expand in this area, but he needs more knowledge than just data and statistics. Annoyed Ciel tells him to be quiet.[382]

Suddenly a scream shatters the air, and Sebastian takes off leaving Baldroy in charge. While Ciel is furiously waiting for Sebastian's return, people suddenly rush to buy Funtom's ladies' products. When Sebastian returns, he explains everything to an irritated Ciel. Unexpectedly, Ciel realizes the value in using a celebrity to pitch products—therefore, he decides to use Irene Diaz's face on all their ad campaigns. As he explains everything to Sebastian in his study later, Sebastian claps lightly, stating Ciel's greed knows no bounds.[383]

Emerald Witch Arc

Ciel is travelling to Germany with Sebastian in a train. As he attempts to practise his German speaking skills, Sebastian calls his accent preposterous, much to Ciel's annoyance.[384] It is revealed in a flashback that one week ago, the Queen requested for him to investigate certain mysterious deaths that occurred in southern Germany. When the Kaiser and government refused her offer of assistance, she decided to send Ciel to investigate. Ciel questions why she needed to specifically ask him to go abroad, when he had only done so once before. He brushes aside Sebastian's offer of asking for a more detailed reason, stating that it is the job of the Watchdog to "get excited and run as soon as you throw a bone at it."

He considers using various underworld networks that span from Europe to Asia, including a particular person who was also associated with his father.[385] Ciel then calls Chlaus over to discuss his travels in Germany. He learns that he had visited the actual locations of the deaths themselves and the only explanation local villagers could muster was that it was due to the "witch's curse".[386] Ciel thinks the idea is ridiculous. Resigned, he concludes that he will have to go to the place personally.[387] He proceeds to question Chlaus about Undertaker's disappearance and Chlaus responds that they never interfered with each other much and that the only person who knew Vincent before him was Diedrich. Ciel remarks that he will have to visit him and orders Sebastian to prepare the tickets.[388]

Presently, Ciel and Sebastian travel to Germany by train. Although Sebastian tutored him, Ciel is unable to understand the "East Franconian dialect of Southern Germany.[389] Annoyed, he tells Sebastian all of his studying was a waste of time. Sebastian covers his laughing mouth, saying Ciel had to start with the basics.

Ciel orders Sebastian to ask the man about the curse. The information Sebastian gets is inconclusive; therefore, Ciel decides to head to the Werewolves' Forest because it would be meaningless to talk to a crazy person. Sebastian states the man does not want to take them; Ciel slyly replies that they should just buy the carriage then.[390] Sebastian instructs the servants to put the luggage in one carriage, and then they all set out.

Sebastian and Ciel are together in one carriage. Noticing that his compass is spinning wildly, Ciel comments that there must be mineral resources nearby. Sebastian mockingly responds that it could be the curse. Although Ciel dismisses the notion, Sebastian states that his response is strange—Ciel is a boy who has met Grim Reapers and demons, yet he denies the existence of curses and werewolves. Moreover, the seal on his eye is also a type of curse. Sebastian explains that demons only appear when humans give up their souls for their wish.[391] When Ciel asks if Sebastian ever appeared at any Satanic rituals, Sebastian responds that those were just lecherous meetings of vile humans.

The group suddenly sees a village in the forest, and everyone disembarks from the carriages.[392] Baldroy and Finnian both call out to see if anyone's there.[393] They are all then unexpectedly surrounded by angry villagers who are waving their pitchforks at the group. Ciel instructs Sebastian that they want to speak to the Lord of the village[394] who the villagers have mentioned. Suddenly, Sieglinde Sullivan, a young girl in a strong man's arms, appears. She introduces herself as the Lord of this forest. She explains that their village, Wolfsschlucht, doesn't allow visitors.[395] However, Sieglinde tells her butler Wolfram Gelzer to ask them to come to the Emerald Castle. On the way, Sieglinde, speaking in German, asks how old Ciel is. Ciel feels she's saying something rude (she called him "Shorty" in German); Sebastian tells her that Ciel is 13 years old.

When they arrive at the castle, Sieglinde tells Wolfram to show the servants to their quarters.[396] Sebastian leaves Ciel with Sieglinde in the dining room and proceeds to the kitchen.[397] Ciel tries to communicate with her in the limited German that he speaks. He does manage to tell her that his parents are dead. When Sebastian finally returns to Ciel's side, he has prepared the meal; however, they are interrupted by news about a werewolf attack.[398] Ciel is shocked, whereas Sebastian is skeptical.

Ciel and Sebastian both ask Sieglinde if they may accompany her so they can learn about the forest's dangers.[399] They are unable to deduce anything from the old woman's ravings. Later on, when Ciel is with Sebastian in his room, he instructs him to prepare some strong tea since it's going to be a long night.[400] Suddenly Ciel spits out his tea, and Sebastian discovers Sieglinde eavesdropping outside their door.[401] After countless misunderstandings,[402] Sieglinde tells them about her ancestor the Emerald Witch. Furthermore, she wants them to tell her all about the outside world since she has never left this place.[403] Ciel starts by showing her some toys; after some time playing, she falls asleep. Sebastian congratulates an exhausted Ciel for working so hard and communicating with the simple words he knew[404] Suddenly, Wolfram comes in; he apologizes for Sieglinde's behavior and carries her out. He instructs Sebastian to leave as soon as dawn breaks.[405]

Consequently, Ciel and Sebastian secretly head into the forest to investigate.[405] Sebastian thinks that he cannot sense anything or feel any presence. Suddenly, tears start falling from Ciel's eyes. He is unable to stop it; his skin also starts changing color. Unexpectedly, the werewolf appears and runs off. Unconcerned about his condition, Ciel wants to follow it immediately, but Sebastian stops him. He states that there is something wrong in this forest, and he must take Ciel back. Once he deposits Ciel back in his room, Sebastian heads out once more.

However, once Sebastian leaves Ciel, the miasma greatly affects Ciel. By the time Sebastian returns, he is even worse off than Sebastian and falls unconscious. Ciel starts drowning in the memories of his traumatic past.[406] He recalls being locked up in a cage with two other boys. "Ciel" was eventually the only one left with him. When he was stabbed on the ritual table, Ciel suddenly wakes up in bed, screaming.[407] Finnian is holding his hand, and Snake is by his bedside. Baldroy states that he almost lost a few years there, and Tanaka agrees with him.[408] Sebastian reaches his hand out to Ciel when Ciel unexpectedly knocks it away.[409] Ciel then grabs hold of Finnian, surprising everyone. He says "'Ciel' doesn't want pain anymore"; this confuses everyone even more. When Sebastian tries again, Tanaka stops him. Ciel suddenly starts screaming about the lights being too dim. Everyone feels that his eyesight may have been affected by the attack as well.

The next day, Sebastian instructs Finnian to take care of Ciel. Therefore, Finnian is stationed with him continuously. When Ciel refuses to eat, he offers him milk with honey. However, he blows too hard on the warm milk (at the speed of 50m/s). The milk splashes all over Ciel. Finnian immediately offers to clean him up.[410] He even offers to take Ciel outside, but Ciel replies he's extremely afraid. Determined, Finnian responds that the day Ciel gave him a name, he decided to protect him.[411] Ciel softly answers he's not worth protecting. Ciel starts crying; seeing his tears, Finnian also starts crying. Finnian then recalls his past.[412] Presently, Finnian tells Ciel that he and Sebastian made him into who he is now.[413] Ciel tells him he does not want Sebastian here, upsetting Finnian.[414]

Later on, Sebastian brings Sieglinde to see Ciel.[415] Finnian happily points out that she is speaking English now. Sebastian quietly tells him to clear the dishes and leave. Sieglinde proceeds to change Ciel's bandages.[416] Once she is done, she leaves with Sebastian.

Later in the day, when Finnian is taking care of Ciel, a werewolf attacks them.[417] He protects Ciel, and he kicks the werewolf out of the window. The servants burst in, and Finnian tells them what happened. Baldroy wants to go after him, but Sebastian stops him.[418] Sieglinde says something about a ritual and leaves with Wolfram.

A few minutes later, the servants beg Ciel to come out of bed—everything is all right now. However, Ciel screams that he just wants to go home. As Sebastian is bandaging Finnian's back's wounds, he is conflicted over Ciel's contradictory orders (before, Ciel confidently said they are not leaving until they solve the case—now he's yelling he wants to go home). Sebastian wonders what he should do now.[419]

Meanwhile, a troubled Finnian watches over Ciel as he sleeps.[420] In his sleep, Ciel has entered his inner world. On a giant chess board, he faces his other self. "Ciel" states it's so unlike Ciel to be brought to a halt.[421] Ciel adds he does not want to suffer anymore.

After John Brown delivers the Queen's message, Sebastian comes to see Ciel. After Sebastian throws Finnian out of the room, he starts communicating with Ciel telepathically. He asks Ciel if he's decided to abandon his position as the Queen's Watchdog.[422] The darkness slowly envelops Ciel as Sebastian issues his ultimatum—abandoning his revenge halfway is against the contract.[423] He was going to follow Tanaka's suggestion and wait, but now they are out of time. He finally declares that it's a boring end to Ciel's journey, and he doubts that Ciel will be able to fill him up.[424] As the darkness starts strangling Ciel, he wonders if he's going to die.[425]

In his inner world, Ciel meets his parents, Angelina Dalles, Doll and Joker. They all, except Doll, ask him the different reasons he decided to pursue his revenge. Ciel responds negatively to all of their reasons.[426] He then shouts that everything he did was to clear his own shame—he is a selfish and self-righteous human, and he did it all for himself.[427] Breaking free, he rushes past all of them, screaming Sebastian's name.

After escaping his inner world, Ciel wakes up in the darkness; he orders Sebastian to instantly let go of him. Sebastian smiles and states that he's glad his "Young Master" has returned to him. Ciel responds that it was a terrible wake-up call.[428] Sitting up in bed, Ciel suddenly puts his foot on Sebastian's shoulder—he asks Sebastian if he was really trying to eat him just now.[429] Sebastian lightly responds that he was only 90% serious.

After a few minutes, Ciel tells Sebastian to let "them" in; he'll talk to them now. Sebastian opens the door, and all of the servants tumble into the room.[430] Sebastian remarks that they're really rude for listening at their master's door. Finnian tries to lunge on to Ciel, but Sebastian stops him. Ciel smiles and offers him his hand instead; crying, Finnian takes it.[431]

All of them, Sebastian included, line up by Ciel's bedside. Ciel speaks—because of his carelessness, they all suffered and worried. He asks them to forgive him. Although they are surprised, he adds determinedly that they will never see him in such a sorry state again. He finally asks that they continue to serve him.[432] They all respond with "Yes, My Lord."

After a few minutes of the servants' light banter, Ciel also makes another request—he wants them to forget how he was until now. Mey-Rin deduces that Ciel also recalls his off-the-charts behavior.[433] Ciel adds that he didn't want to behave like that. Baldroy concludes that Ciel reacted the same way as soldiers. On the battlefield, when they are wounded for the first time, they panic.[434] Sebastian wonders if the attack's aim was purely psychological. When Ciel asks him to explain, Sebastian relates the news about the Queen's letter. He also had the components of the antidote analyzed. When Ciel reads the Queen's letter, everything starts to fall into place. However, he's incredibly annoyed with the Queen's final request—she wants the "little green witch to come to tea".[435]

Ciel knows this request won't be easy to accomplish. Sebastian adds that even the Queen's selfishness is incomparable to Ciel's.[436] Finally, Ciel tells the entire household to make preparations to leave—further instructions will come later. When they exit the room, Ciel tells Sebastian to make more tea so he can really wake up and discuss all the details with him.[437]

Sebastian and Ciel then visit Sieglinde. When she finds them outside her window, she's shocked.[438] Ciel responds that there's no reason for her to be surprised since she herself is a witch.[439] He adds that he wanted to thank her before leaving; he just wanted to offer her a chance to go to the outside world.[440] Although she hesitates, she accepts when Ciel calls her "his friend"[441] Furthermore, Sebastian adds that she will have to enter society as a debutante.[442] Then they both take her hand[443] and lead her to the underground chamber where the magic circle is. Although she's surprised, they insist that this is the entrance to the outside world. When Sebastian opens the entrance underneath the magic circle, Sieglinde is shocked. He states that a "snake" told him about it;[444] she asks then questions if he is a warlock, but he answers that he's just "one hell of a butler."[445]

Ciel then asks her about the duties of the Emerald Witch; she explains her family's duties.[446] Sebastian next places his hand on the altar; she warns him he'll suffer misfortune if he does that. However, Sebastian easily pulls a lever to reveal an elevator-style door. Sebastian carries an astounded Sieglinde as they travel downwards. When the elevator doors open, they find a room full of monitors and radar equipment.[447] The "dots" represent the location of every villager. Sebastian explains that the "amulets" that everyone is wearing as werewolf protection are actually some kind of transmitter.[448] They can't believe that the villagers managed to use such an advanced trick. At the same time, Sieglinde's horror continues to grow.

Suddenly, Sebastian hears someone coming, and they hide.[449] Entering another room, they find it full of giant cylinders. When they finally find a hiding spot, they witness some "werewolves" and humans talking. Unable to take any more, Sieglinde bursts out and accuses them of deceiving her. Amongst the confusion that follows, Sebastian reveals that the "werewolves" are people in costumes.[450] Furthermore, the "miasma" is actually a chemical weapon made in this factory.

Sebastian continues to guard Ciel and Sieglinde while Sieglinde's mother reveals the truth.[451] As Sieglinde screams in agony, Wolfram rushes at Sebastian; Sebastian easily knocks him aside. Comforting Sieglinde, Ciel declares that children are not "tools"; he can't believe a mother would ruin her child's feet just for a chemical formula.[452] Ciel suddenly fires a shot in the air, grabs Sieglinde, and heads for the elevator. As the doors close, he orders Sebastian to take care of them.[453]

Outside in the forest, Ciel tells Sieglinde his servants should be coming at any minute. He tells her that after today, people will try to use her. She may even experience worse things than before. Therefore, it's time to choose—he points a gun at her head, asking her if she wants to live or get it over with right now.[454] Sieglinde cries, saying she's horrible for creating the gas.[455] Ciel responds if she dies, she won't have to listen to the screams of the people she could have saved.[456] If she can create the greatest poison, she can also create a "magical" antidote—so, he asks if she will choose death or accept the challenge. Ciel is happy when she agrees to go with him. He states the flare gave their position away; when she expresses concern for Sebastian being exposed to the gas, he laughs, saying there is no need to worry about Sebastian.[457]

In the forest, the household is trying to find Ciel. When they reach him, he states their retreat plan starts now. They'll split into two groups and escape.[458] According to the plan, Snake carries Ciel disguised as Sieglinde. However, because of Wolfram's surprise attack, Snake loses his grip on Ciel. When Snake falls down, Wolfram grabs the "lady." However, since this is actually Ciel in disguise, he thanks Wolfram for coming and shoots him.

Within seconds, Ciel realizes that Wolfram unbelievably dodged his bullet.[459] Wolfram then mercilessly hits Ciel. Snake and Baldroy are unable to come to his aid. When Wolfram is about to deliver the final blow, Diedrich saves Ciel.[460] Although Ciel is surprised to see him, Diedrich quickly defeats Wolfram. He tells the three of them to hurry up and run—this forest has more dangers than these "villagers." Since the German army is here, they are not safe at all. Unexpectedly, a Panzer (the latest model of an armored land vehicle) appears, shocking Ciel, Baldroy, and Snake. As they start running, Ciel exclaims that he can't believe the Germans have such advanced weaponry. Baldroy tries shooting it, but he can't put a scratch on it. Diedrich tells them if they can get to a train they can escape.

Suddenly, Ciel falls, still weak from his injuries.[461] At the same time, the Panzer's cannon fires. Diedrich, Baldroy, and Snake look on in horror as they are unable to rescue Ciel. Luckily, Sebastian arrives just in time to save him. Ciel immediately scolds him for being late. Sebastian apologizes and states that he has all the gas' samples.[462] Ciel tells Baldroy and Snake to help the others get to the train; he also hands the case to Snake. Finally, he states he and Sebastian will take care of the Panzer.

As the tank comes toward them, Sebastian holds Ciel in one arm since he forgot to bring an extra pair of shoes. He slyly adds that Ciel looks so petite in his dress-completely resembling the Emerald Witch. Ciel orders Sebastian to destroy the Panzer.[463] Sebastian uses physical strength, Baldroy's "special supplies", and Ciel's guidance to completely destroy it. When it is in flames, Ciel comments that it is now a moving oven; Sebastian agrees wholeheartedly.[464]

Ciel suddenly sees two, German Grim Reapers. They are shocked that he can see them. Sascha thinks that it may be because Ciel himself is close to death or because of his lineage. Nevertheless, they take their leave and disappear.[465]

Sebastian and Ciel arrive in the nick of time to save the household from the German female officer. Plunging his knife into her throat, Sebastian states some food escaped from the oven.[466] Ciel orders Sebastian to rescue Wolfram. Mey-Rin and Sebastian help Sieglinde with his treatment. When he comes to, Sebastian tells him a butler is not allowed to dies before his master—his senior, Tanaka, told him that.[467] Ciel tells Diedrich they need a place to hide. Diedrich tells him they are heading there right now. Sebastian asks Ciel why he asked him to save Wolfram. Ciel answers he needed Wolfram to look after Sieglinde; she is his insurance.[468] Sebastian smiles and asks why Ciel needs "insurance" when he has him. Ciel responds that Sebastian is the least trustworthy of all.[469]

The entire group then arrives at Diedrich's castle. Heinrich, his butler, states it is an honor to meet Ciel; he reminds him of his father. Ciel replies it is awkward to hear that when he is wearing a dress.[470] Baldroy, Finnian, and Mey-Rin comment on how big the house is. However, Heinrich says this castle, Weizsäcker, is small compared to the other castles. Ciel looks at Diedrich and comments that he is a rich boy. The wounded are all treated; Mey-Rin and Tanaka offer to help since they are not injured.

Later, Sebastian helps Ciel with his bath.[471] They discuss the case; Sebastian concludes that the German's technology is now in England's hands. He is amazed by how fast humans can change. He adds teasingly, though, that Ciel still does not grow taller at all.[472] Piqued, Ciel replies he does not need to hear that from a demon who has not changed in centuries.

Ciel and Sebastian then talk with Diedrich. He tells them that Undertaker came to visit him and then left for France. He said that "Earl Phantomhive is still with us after all," shocking Ciel and Sebastian since they cannot determine which Earl he was referring to. Diedrich responds that Undertaker is always talking nonsense, so he does not pay much attention to him.[473]

Ciel and Sieglinde then sit down to dinner. Seeing her deplorable manners, Sebastian states he can't wait to teach her. Finally, Ciel and Sebastian talk with Wolfram. He asks Sebastian why he saved him, and Sebastian responds because his Master asked him to.[474] Ciel adds that it was extremely irresponsible of Wolfram to leave Sieglinde with complete strangers.[475] They will both accompany them to England.

Wolfram and Sieglinde are disguised on their journey to England.[476] Before Ciel leaves, Diedrich tells him to be careful. When the group arrives in London, Sebastian asks Wolfram to refrain from speaking in German because it will draw unwanted attention. They leave the servants (who head for the mansion) and proceed to Nina Hopkins's establishment to procure a wardrobe for Sieglinde's meeting with the Queen. After the little adventure there, Ciel and Sebastian return with Sieglinde and Wolfram to the mansion. Agni and Soma Asman Kadar [477] greet them. After a whole day of fun, lightheartedness, and more misunderstandings (mainly between Ciel and Elizabeth Midford because of Sieglinde), Ciel finally retires for the day with Sebastian in tow.

Blue Cult Arc

The night before Sieglinde Sullivan's expected audience with Queen Victoria, Sieglinde and Wolfram Gelzer talk with Ciel and Sebastian Michaelis in the Phantomhive Manor. After Sieglinde affirms that she is still resolved to develop a magic remedy to help people, Ciel orders her to give the Queen the process to make mustard gas, to Sieglinde's and Wolfram's surprise. He says that she will be treated cordially by England if she cooperates, especially because the fact that she can create mustard gas will be exposed sooner or later. Wolfram is worried that Sieglinde will be exploited again, as she was by the German military. Sebastian, however, points out that it is, truly, Sieglinde's choice whether or not she is used or uses others. Ciel interrupts Wolfram before he could argue, saying that because he is Sieglinde's friend, he will not stop her if she chooses to move to some place obscure and live as a doctor with Wolfram. He adds that, because he is her friend, he knows that Sieglinde will never be able to stop studying and searching for ways to gain new knowledge. Ciel asserts that she will need a lot of money for new knowledge, for even Wolfsschlucht operated on national-level amounts of money, and that Wolfram is too awkward to raise that kind of money, much to Wolfram's chagrin.[478]

Ciel goes on to say that all Sieglinde has is her intellect and information on mustard gas, and he forbids her from speaking about the SuLIN gas. Sieglinde is shocked, and Sebastian explains that mustard gas does not compare to the SuLIN gas in terms of lethality; thus, if employed in England, countless deaths will result. Sieglinde vows to always keep SuLIN a secret. Ciel reminds her to consider everyone, including him, as an adversary who is trying to use her, and he encourages her to use everyone else in order to obtain the future she desires.[479]

The following day, at the outside of Buckingham Palace, a tensed and anxious Sieglinde is greeted by Charles Grey and Charles Phipps, who subsequently lead her, Wolfram, and Ciel into the palace, up the stairs, and down a hallway. They open double doors to a room where Queen Victoria and her aide John Brown are waiting. Sieglinde curtsies to the Queen, and the latter welcomes her to England. Both Ciel and Wolfram are relieved that things have progressed smoothly thus far. They move to a table filled with cakes and tea, which Sieglinde marvels at; Ciel advises her to only take one cake and not indulge. The Queen tells Ciel to inform her about his trip to the Werewolves' Forest. He explains that the so-called curse of the Werewolves' Forest was, in fact, toxic mustard gas, which they halted the development of in England because of its dangerous nature. The German army had advanced it to the point that they were ready to use it in actual combat, thanks to Sieglinde. Ciel ends the explanation with a statement that he believes Sieglinde will be beneficial to England. The Queen asks if Sieglinde can create more powerful things than mustard gas, a question to which Sieglinde responds the negative. Ciel says that he is always impressed with the Queen's sharp intuition and that it was a shock to discover that toxic gas was the real cause of the curse. He assures the Queen that if Sieglinde worked for the sake of her subjects, wonderful results are guaranteed. Sieglinde thanks Victoria and promises to prove her worth. Victoria is joyous; she praises Ciel for accomplishing his mission and asserts that his parents must be happy along with her late husband Prince Albert. At the mention of Albert, she sobs, and John is compelled to comfort her with his Albert puppet, to Sieglinde's and Wolfram's astonishment; Ciel tells them that this happens often, so they should disregard it. John remarks that Ciel has grown up to be like his father, and the Queen agrees, saying that he is very reliable. Ciel grows pensive at the idea that he is similar to his father.[480]

After the meeting is over, Wolfram carries Sieglinde outside, and they and Ciel reunite with Sebastian. Ciel asks him if he has gotten rid of the SuLIN samples, as ordered, and Sebastian confirms this. Ciel, then, says that he is tired and wishes to hurry home to sleep. He stares at Sebastian for a while, and when Sebastian inquires about this, he dismisses it as nothing. The four of them return to the Phantomhive Manor.[481]

In the middle of the night, Ciel is woken up when he is forced to ingest a liquid. Still half-asleep, Ciel asks if it is morning yet, and the visitor covers his eyes and urges him to sleep. In the morning, Ciel jolts awake, incidentally grabbing Sebastian's wrist. Sebastian tells him that he was going to wake him since Ciel seemed agitated. Ciel claims that he is fine, releasing his butler. Sebastian hands him a cup of tea, and Ciel dolefully stares at his reflection in it.[482]

One morning, while Ciel is in his office, Sebastian comes in with a letter from Queen Victoria. Ciel reads the letter: the Queen tells him that she enjoyed the tea party with Sieglinde Sullivan the other day and asks him, for Charles Phipps's sake, which one of the cakes she sent home he likes most. She, then, requests for him to visit the Sphere Music Hall, which is a popular music hall that holds mysterious gatherings every Saturday, to investigate, disclosing her concern: with the absence of social classification—men and women of all ages are enthralled by it, "be they peers or laborers"—and the sheer number of attendees—the street in front of the hall tends to teem with carriages on Saturday nights. Interest piqued, she sent investigators to look into the event, but they, when questioned by Charles Grey and Charles Phipps, confessed that they have found nothing. Oddly so, the investigators themselves became regular attendees, even after their investigation was over. The Queen admits that she has never before heard of parties that permit all sorts to attend and is worried that "some manner of evil scheme" may be taking place. She ends the letter with a question asking Ciel for his thoughts on the subject. After reading the letter, Ciel inspects the Sphere Music Hall invitation the Queen has provided for him, and he admits that he did not know such a music hall existed.[483]

Abruptly, an agitated Edward Midford rushes in, shouting Ciel's name. Surprised, Ciel comments that Edward looks pale. Edward, then, reveals that Elizabeth Midford has run away from the Midford Manor, to Ciel's and Sebastian's shock.[484]

Once Edward and Ciel are seated, the former informs him about a certain meeting Herman Greenhill introduced him to a month ago; he took Elizabeth along to one of them, at her insistence, and she got her fortune told by Blavat Sky; afterward, she attended the meeting on a regular basis, infatuated with the place, and ultimately stopped going home.[485]

Edward and Ciel simultaneously state that the meeting is held at the Sphere Music Hall. Edward is surprised that Ciel knows the name. Both Ciel and Sebastian remark on Queen Victoria's "fearsome" powers of observation, and the former explains to Edward that the Queen has requested him to investigate the music hall. When Ciel says that their priority is locating Elizabeth, Edward tells him that he can see Elizabeth if he goes to the music hall: Edward had gone to the meetings a few times and attempted to convince her to return home, but, each time, Elizabeth refused to and claimed that her "radiance" lies there, at the music hall. Ciel declares that they will have to witness it for themselves and orders Sebastian to prepare a carriage for them.[486]

After Ciel, Sebastian, and Edward arrive at the Sphere Music Hall, Edward points out the absence of Elizabeth, Herman, Edgar Redmond, Lawrence Bluewer, and Gregory Violet. Ciel says that the environment is unsettling, to which Sebastian agrees. Edward tugs on Ciel's sleeve and draws his attention to Blavat. Ciel proposes that they get their fortunes told, quipping that Blavat would be no fraud if he can "divine the sorrows" of a demon. Sebastian responds that aside from the selfishness of his master, which is his primary concern, his mind is free of worries. Blavat is startled when he sees Sebastian and Ciel, and then he tells Sebastian to sit down, while Ciel notes that the air has shifted. When Sebastian tries to get his fortune told, Blavat says that Sebastian does not have the divine protection of any star because he is not human, to Ciel's and Sebastian's astonishment.[487]

Afterward, Blavat laughs, stating that, now, Sebastian and Ciel must be assuming that he is not human, either. When Blavat describes Sebastian as a darkness which corrupts the light of stars, the other attendees demand that Sebastian leaves. Blavat silences the aroused crowd and urges Sebastian to depart from the place immediately. On cue, two men escort Sebastian out of the music hall. Blavat addresses Ciel, next, asking if he is Sebastian's friend. Ciel claims that Sebastian is a senior worker from the same factory as he. Blavat offers to read his fortune, and assures him that Sebastian will not be harmed.[488]

Subsequently, Ciel lets his blood drop into Blavat's cup. An excited Blavat informs him that he is favored by the divine protection of Sirius. The other attendees flock around Ciel, telling him that Sirius is a first magnitude star and that he is the only one they know who is protected by it.[489]

When Ciel inquires about Sirius, Blavat explains that every person receives divine protection from a star; among the stars Sirius, Canopus, Vega, and Polaris, the first magnitude Sirius is the rarest; people under Sirius have "lofty ideals and the air of genius about them," and they tend to be extremely two-faced. He warns Ciel that the darkness Sebastian is clinging on to his light, and that he may lose his radiance if he remains with Sebastian. He, then, volunteers to help Ciel distance himself from Sebastian, if he is unable to do so on his own.[490]

Ciel's bracelet.

Bemused, Ciel wonders to himself if Blavat truly means what he said, and if he is a supernatural being disguised as a human. Blavat, dumping the tainted water of the cup into a bucket set beside him, tells him not to look so grim and advises him to take action soon or "the end" will be upon him in no time. Ciel thanks Blavat, intending to leave, but the latter stops him and gives him a bracelet; he maintains that, with the bracelet, Ciel should feel closer to Sirius' divinity, and that Ciel can pay him a visit any time for advice.[491]

Afterward, Edward runs to Ciel and asks why Blavat had Sebastian thrown out. Ciel says he does not know and shows the bracelet to him, disclosing the fact that the bracelet is made of pure silver; he observes that the bracelet, thus, is far too opulent to be bestowed as a souvenir upon persons who get their fortunes told. He notices that other attendees are wearing their own bracelets, and that the bracelets are designed differently than his, speculating that the designs of the bracelets are dependent on whichever star they are under.[492]

When Ciel asks Edward which star Elizabeth is under, the latter reveals that it is Canopus and that Elizabeth was also told that she is rare. After Ciel remarks that Blavat mentioned Vega and Polaris, the clock chimes, signalling that it is eleven o'clock. The other attendees announce that it is time for carolling. Edward explains to a puzzled Ciel that the meetings close with everyone singing together, and adds that, however, today seems particularly unusual. An old woman slaps Edward's shoulder, saying that today is the fourth Saturday—which is the reason for the unusualness of that day.[493]

Ciel, Edward, and the crowd look over at the stage. To Ciel's and Edward's astoundment, several individuals in dark cloaks have emerged, with a few of them carrying candles.[494]

Ciel and Edward observe the men in robes who have lined up onstage. The men begin singing a hymn. Ciel muses that the song must be unique to the Sphere Music Hall gathering, since he has never heard it before. After talking about stars and radiance and urging all the attendees to sing together, they remove their robes, revealing that they are Gregory, Herman, Lawrence, and Edgar, to Ciel's and Edward's shock. After the four announce that they will be singing a song called "Shining Star," the lyrics and music of which composed by Blavat, they proceed to sing and dance, to the crowd's delight, while Ciel and Edward remain stunned. Once the performance ends, the four receive an ovation. Ciel notes the quick tempo of the song, the perfectly coordinated dance, and the atmosphere which excites even those unfamiliar with the music, and thinks that this might be what Elizabeth called "the radiance that only exists here."[495]

Afterward, Ciel, Edward, and the other attendees exit the music hall. Edward comments that the performance was full of "passion and punch," and Ciel agrees. Ciel, then, notices other people raving about the performance, and reflects on the Sphere Music Hall, which, at a glance, contains no signs of evil afoot for Queen Victoria to be worried. He watches as a little boy sings the song the four sang earlier, and is contemplating the situation, when Sebastian welcomes Ciel back. Ciel and Edward turn around, and are dumbfounded when they see him with two prostitutes; Edward scolds Sebastian, and the women soon leave.[496]

At Ciel's townhouse, Sebastian accommodates Ciel and Edward with tea, while details of the event that transpired at the music hall are relayed to him. Ciel comments that their performance was nothing like any opera or ballet he has ever seen. When Edward describes the song as the kind where one would start humming without realizing it, Sebastian sings and dances to a verse, baffling Ciel and Edward. Sebastian is about to explain why he is familiar with the song, but is interrupted by Agni and Soma Asman Kadar, who offer them sandesh.[497]

After Soma asks Ciel if the song Sebastian sang is "all the rage" in England, for he hears it sung quite often by kids when he goes out to the market with Agni, Ciel concludes that Sebastian has heard the song from the prostitutes, which Sebastian confesses is the case. Sebastian, then, explains that word of mouth, particularly by means of a song, is the most effective method to spread a message. Edward infers, from Sebastian's statements, that the song must have been created to disseminate some sort of ideology, and adds that, however, the song does not seem to have any radical ideals or dangerous concepts woven in, for the lyrics were primarily about stars. Ciel points out that it is possible the song was made to be accessible in order to gather people together in one place so that business can be carried out. He also points out that the meetings, strangely, charge no fees; instead, Blavat hands out bracelets of pure silver.[498]

Sebastian shows the bracelet he stole, and narrates his conversation with a prostitute who recognized the bracelet. Ciel, then, recapitulates what he has learned from Sebastian: the Saturday meetings are open to anyone, but there are closed events that only those who have had their fortunes told can attend, and wonders aloud if that is where Elizabeth has gone off to.[499]

At the Buckingham Palace, Ciel gives a report to Queen Victoria about the Sphere Music Hall, saying that he will continue to investigate the closed door meetings. He also adds that he is yet to see any activity of a treasonous nature. Victoria says that anything is possible when people gather, and gestures to Charles Grey to hand Ciel a list. The list comprises of those from the House of Lords, Scotland Yard, and the military who have been attending the Sphere Music Hall. Victoria says that it frightens her even though they may not be doing anything malicious.[500]

Later, at Ciel's townhouse, Sebastian tells Ciel that closed meetings for those with different bracelets are held on different days of the week at the Sphere Music Hall. Bracelet owners can attend the meeting according to their sign on their specific days—Polaris on Mondays and Wednesdays, Vega on Tuesdays, Canopus on Thursdays, and Sirius on Fridays. He mentions that the next day is a Friday, meaning Ciel, who is protected by Sirius, can attend the event. Sebastian suggests attending the meeting as well, but Ciel says that they may know exactly who is protected by Sirius, and is against the idea. Sebastian agrees, and says he will wait outside and that Ciel can summon him if he wishes. The next day, Ciel visits the music hall, and notes that it is not as crowded as usual. He is greeted by a man who, after confirming that Ciel is under the protection of Sirius, leads him into a room. He then hands Ciel a set of clothes, saying that he has to change into them. After Ciel does so, he tells him to enter the Canis Major door, saying that a meal is ready inside.[501]

The room is filled with seats around a post, and is hardly occupied. A lady hands Ciel a plate of food, and says that dessert is available as well. Ciel notes that the food is expensive, and wonders how they manage to pay for it. The lady then thanks the people in the room for waiting, and announces the arrival of the "Starlight Four," consisting of Herman, Lawrence, Edgar, and Gregory. They welcome everyone to the "S4 Sirius-Limited Event," and say that everyone has given their best that week and that they wish for them to continue shining radiantly; thus they will deliver the "light of healing" via "Starlight Shower."[502]

The ceiling is covered with an image of the stars, and Ciel thinks that it might be a magic lantern. The lady plays the harp, while the Starlight Four sing "Starlight Shower," the lyrics and music of which composed by Blavat. Gregory notices Ciel, and the latter claims that he too has his worries, and is glad to see Gregory so radiant, to which Gregory cryptically replies, "Not really." Ciel then smells a strange scent, notes that he is getting sleepy, and blacks out.[503]

In an unknown room, a sleeping Ciel is approached by Ekizabeth. She apologizes to him, sadly saying that she cannot save him. She then begins crying. Later, Ciel wakes up and sees Gregory, who says that he was soundly asleep, to his horror. He hears the other attendees say that they are feeling refreshed and wish to come back the next week, and notes that no one seems to have been harmed, including him. He stumbles while rising from his seat, and is caught by Gregory, who states that he should eat more. Gregory proceeds to hand Ciel piles of special treats, saying that everyone receives them. After telling him to eat them all, he strides off.[504]

Later, in a carriage, Ciel talks to Sebastian about how he fell asleep due to a drug of sorts but emerged unscathed like the others. Sebastian, then, informs Ciel about his encounter with Fred Abberline, the unusual corpses, and how Fred requests for Ciel's cooperation. Ciel finds it amusing that Scotland Yard would be willing to associate with the "evil Earl Phantomhive." Sebastian says that Fred stated that, while their methods may be different, they share the goal of protecting people. Ciel, initially surprised, comments that Fred is the kind of man who will "never make it up the ladder."[505]

When Ciel says that he needs more information on the corpses, Sebastian pulls out a map, revealing that he discovered eighteen corpses, five of which buried in Epping Forest, east of London; after careful investigation, Sebastian came to the conclusion that the corpses have nothing to common. When Ciel orders Sebastian to collect the bodies and get someone to look at them, Sebastian asks Ciel who he wants to perform the autopsies, thereby reminding Ciel of Undertaker. Ciel, then, decides to have Fred study the corpses.[506]

Suddenly, Sebastian smells blood on Ciel and tears off Ciel's shirt, exposing needle marks, to Ciel's and Sebastian's. Sebastian apologizes for his carelessness and carries him to the manor where Sieglinde and Wolfram reside, to have him treated. They meet Wolfram first and then Sieglinde, who is strapped on her new invention: "Arachne Patousa," which are spider legs that enable her to walk. When Sebastian informs Sieglinde about the possibility of Ciel being drugged, she leads them into a room filled with contraptions. Sieglinde discloses that Queen Victoria supplied the items and that she, Grey, and Phipps visit from time to time with cake; Ciel is surprised that the Queen would carry out personal visits, and notes that she is cunning.[507]

As instructed by Sieglinde, Ciel undresses, and Sieglinde inspects his person and deduces that he is not poisoned. Wolfram, then, makes the conjecture that Ciel became anaemic because his blood was taken from him rather than something being injected into him. He adds that his blood being drawn may be for blood transfusion. Sebastian asserts that the attendees are unwittingly paying for their food and entertainment at special events with their blood. Sieglinde says that collecting blood from a large number of people, which is what the music hall is doing, makes sense for a vast amount of data is needed to improve the accuracy of blood transfusion, and remarks that involving civilians in the unethical research is "vicious."[508]

Ciel recalls what the Queen said about the dangers of people gathering, and states that he knows for certain that the meetings are a menace and that Elizabeth is there. When Sieglinde asks him what he will do, Ciel admits that Elizabeth and the other participants will not listen to reason, and Sebastian agrees, saying that they are all thoroughly under the spell. Ciel decides that to wake them up, he must have decisive proof of the crimes, and tells Sebastian to follow him, determined to expose the music hall's "foul scheme."[509]

In Ciel's townhouse, Fred informs Ciel and Sebastian the corpses died due to severe blood loss. Ciel and Sebastian conclude that the Sphere Music Hall is bleeding their guests to death, and the former adds that they may also be conducting experiments in blood transfusion. When Fred declares that he will have them immediately arrested, Ciel has Sebastian show Fred the list of people who regularly attend the Sphere Music Hall gatherings—among them are members of the military, the House of Lords, and Scotland Yard. Some of them, they affirm, must be lending financial support to the music hall. Ciel warns Fred that if he were to act openly, the individuals in power may not only hush up the investigation, but they may fail to catch the true mastermind, as well. When Fred suggests that they request aid from Queen Victoria, Ciel states that, by the word of law, she cannot intervene in domestic affairs, and assures him that he will handle it, as the Queen's Watchdog.[510]

In a carriage parked outside Sphere Music Hall, Ciel observes that the quickest method would be to infiltrate the inner circle. Sebastian points out a flaw with his plan: as long as Blavat is present, they may be exposed. Ciel, then, suggests bribing the tradesmen who enter and leave the building daily, but admits that Blavat will be the first to hear about it if negotiations fail.[511]

When a couple of tradesmen accidentally drop a box, Nina Hopkins scolds them. Both Ciel and Sebastian are surprised by her appearance.[512]

After Nina and her assistants exit Sphere Music Hall, Ciel offers to take her home. At first, she refuses, but after he reveals who he is, she enthusiastically agrees and climbs in his carriage. There, she explains in detail her association with Blavat and the music hall, and also admits that she never met "those with the names of stars," who are of higher status than the S4. When Ciel requests that she brings Sebastian with her the next time she returns to the music hall, she flatly refuses to, in fear that Sebastian's "outdated grab" will tarnish her reputation. Ciel, then, grants her permission to choose Sebastian's clothes.[513]

At Hopkins' Tailor Shop, Nina forces Sebastian to change in and out of several outfits, to Ciel's amusement. Sebastian tells Ciel that he can slip into the music hall without Nina's assistance, but Ciel insists that he accompanies her.[514]

Later, Ciel, along with Edward, is surprised when Sebastian returns with an unconscious Elizabeth. While Edward watches over Elizabeth in a bedroom, Sebastian informs Ciel about his entrusting the blood he obtained from the facility to Sieglinde, and adds that he was not able to meet the four with the names of stars. At this juncture, Edward enters the room, questioning why Sebastian came back when he saw proof of the music hall's "evil deeds." Sebastian explains why he thinks that destroying the music hall and its "charismatic celebrities," the S4 and Blavat, will work in their disfavor. After Edward asks if there is nothing they can do, Sebastian comments on the "irksome" nature of human hearts to a dour Ciel.[515]

A panic-stricken Agni rushes to Ciel, Sebastian, and Edward and informs them of Elizabeth's disappearance. They go up to the bedroom where she was sleeping, and Agni explains that he went to check up on her, but she was gone when he arrived. Ciel notes that she has tied the curtains together in order to make her escape out the window, and deduces that Sebastian knew about her escape; the latter affirms this, insinuating that Ciel would not have thought of anything effective to keep her there, had they detained her; Sphere Music Hall still controls her. Edward asks what it is that has enchanted her, and Ciel suggests that Blavat has brainwashed her, to which Edward admits is possible.[516]

The doorbell sounds, and Agni leaves to get the door. While Ciel and Edward discuss Elizabeth and the other Londoners' infatuation with Sphere Music Hall, they hear a commotion downstairs, which drives Ciel to exit the room and snap at Agni and Soma. He, then, discovers a multitude of poor children. Soma states that they are giving them food since it is his duty as a prince and the viceroy of Ciel's townhouse to do so, and Ciel comments that the place has turned into a "soup kitchen." When the children praise the quality of the bread and how nice the people there are, Ciel comes to a realization, and announces that he has figured something out. Agni asks if he is upset, but Ciel denies it and thanks them instead, to Agni's surprise and Soma's delight.[517]

Afterward, Ciel gives Sebastian two weeks to invest in the abandoned theatre across the street from Sphere Music Hall, remodel it into Funtom Music Hall, and make preparations for the grand opening; they also establish the Phantom Five, a group that will rival Sphere Music Hall's Starlight Four, consisting of Soma, Edward, Cheslock, Clayton, and Joanne Harcourt.

Later, Ciel informs a shocked Edward that they are establishing their own music hall, as well as their own group, and explains that when given two options which cost the same, customers would choose the one of higher quality. When Edward asks how they would find a talented, charismatic individual, Ciel points to Edward, to his astonishment, Ciel assures that he is suitable for the role, considering his qualities. Edward eventually agrees to the job in hopes of rescuing Elizabeth Midford, but adds that he cannot do it alone. Ciel tells him that he has already sent his scout, Sebastian, after the other members he has selected.[518]

Subsequently, the recruited five assemble at Ciel's office at the London townhouse. When Cheslock questions their choice of Clayton, Sebastian modifies Clayton's appearance, and they are all impressed with the result. Ciel called for their attention, stating that they must undergo special training. On Ciel's order, Sebastian passes out a folder to each of the five, which details what role they must assume on stage. When Edward asks how to be "a little naughty and aggressive," Sebastian, on Ciel's command, demonstrates it on Edward. Ciel affirms that "novelty and individuality" will allow them to transcend the Starlight Four. When Clayton asks if what they will be doing is enough, Ciel angrily states that he does not want to hear their complaints before they have even begun, adding that enhancing their marketability is critical to whether they win or lose. Sebastian states that he will train them thoroughly.[519]

At night, Sebastian delivers tea to Ciel, and gives his report: Soma is exceptionally talented, for he is not shy and picks up the dancing after being shown the steps only once. Ciel comments in spite of his mental immaturity, Soma is quite capable in almost every area. Sebastian adds that Edward, out of sincere respect for his superiors, is also quickly learning things. After Ciel hands Sebastian a paper which contains all of the new crowd-pleasers he has devised for opening night, he asks him about the blood research; Sebastian replies that he has yet to hear from Sieglinde.[520]

Following the eventful two weeks, the Phantom Five head to Sphere Music Hall to direct its attendees to Funtom Music Hall, while Ciel stays in the new venue's office with Sebastian.[521]

Ciel remarks that the property was "more of a bargain" than he expected. To his amusement, Sebastian complains about the limited span of time Ciel gave him to make preparations. Ciel says that the solution to Sphere Music Hall was, simply, to give the attendees an alternative, and Sebastian says that establishing an imitation across the street from the original is "terribly cheeky and wicked" of Ciel. Ciel asserts that Funtom Corporation is in the entertainment business; it encompasses confectionery, toys, restaurants, and cafes, and, so, operating a theatre is natural. He, then, declares that he will school Blavat and the others on "the art of the finest entertainment money can buy," with his Funtom Music Hall.[522]

Afterward, the Phantom Five gather at Ciel's office, where Ciel commends them for their performance.[523]

Later, Sebastian informs Ciel that he must make preparations for the Phantomhive earldom's Halloween celebration. When Ciel points out that they are preoccupied with Elizabeth's predicament, Sebastian reminds him of how important Halloween is to the tenants on Phantomhive land, which results in Ciel ordering Sebastian to return to Phantomhive Manor and commence the preparations.[524]

On Halloween, Sebastian welcomes Ciel home, and shows him the extravagantly decorated garden. After the Phantomhive servants greet Ciel, Ciel is made to change into a costume. Sebastian explains to Ciel that they have combined various Halloweens from around the world so that their tenants can have quality entertainment; said tenants thank Ciel. Ciel, then, passes out treats to a group of children, and recalls his own family when he sees another.[525]

Subsequently, Sebastian brings Ciel and the other guests to a river, where they are given lanterns. Tanaka tells Ciel that it is part of the Japanese lantern festival. Sebastian has Ciel light everyone's lanterns, which the latter does via a candle. The lanterns are, then, set afloat into the river. While gazing at the scene, Ciel remembers all of the critical events that transpired in his life. Sebastian compares candles and their flame to humans, calling them beautiful. When Ciel advises him to handle them with caution, as, when provoked, they can be formidable, Sebastian assures him that he will strive to keep Ciel's flame alive, for he is a devil of a butler.[526]

At Ciel's office in Funtom Music Hall, Ciel tells the Phantom Five that they must perform well.[527]

After a Phantom Five performance, Ciel, along with Sebastian, comes down the stairs in Funtom Music Hall, spots Blavat among the crowd, and greets him.[528] When Blavat recognizes Ciel as the Earl of Phantomhive, Ciel points out that Blavat must have known who he was since they first met. Blavat retorts that he did not expect a nobleman like Ciel would resort to "such means," and remarks that Funtom Music Hall, even with its advanced facilities, cannot outshine Sphere Music Hall, the original. When Ciel argues that that is for the audience to decide, Blavat states that it is unlikely for Ciel, who failed to win the heart of Elizabeth Midford, to the win the heart of the public. After Blavat leaves, Ciel angrily breaks a Meissen vase, to which Sebastian responds by saying that the outburst of rage is futile and uncharacteristic of him.[529]

Both the Starlight Four and the Phantom Five continue with their respective shows. At one point, Sebastian reports to Ciel that they have drawn about twenty percent of Sphere's attendees to their music hall.[530]

At Phantomhive Manor, Ciel, Sebastian, Soma, and Pitt have convened. When Pitt mentions Ciel's love of mischief, Soma admits that he cannot imagine Ciel as a prankster, which prompts Pitt to say that Vincent Phantomhive and Tanaka had their hands full with Ciel back then. He adds that he still has a photograph of Ciel's family, to Soma's excitement, but an angered Ciel snatches it from Pitt before he can reveal it. Ciel admonishes Pitt, while Soma asks him why he is so upset.[531]

Afterward, Agni enters the room with Fred, who tells Ciel that he needs to speak to him. Consequently, Sebastian asks Pitt and Soma to leave, and they comply. Once they are gone, Fred shows them the newspaper with Sphere Music Hall in the headlines, which, according to him, have silenced the government officials and nobles who have been conspiring with the music hall, and, in turn, Scotland Yard was able to expose the organization's crimes. Ciel and Sebastian, then, explain the treacherous workings of Sphere Music Hall, and their plan to steal the music hall's source of supply. Fred is appalled that they would indirectly induce the deaths of Sirius individuals, deeming it a "heartless method." Ciel retorts that he, the Aristocrat of Evil, took action when Fred, the "righteous police," could not. When Fred vows to solve the case next time without getting Ciel's hands dirty, an amused Ciel urges him to quickly get promoted.[532]

At his townhouse, Ciel informs a shocked Soma and Sieglinde that he is putting the Phantom Five on a hiatus, for a number of reasons: First, the frontman, Edward, was dragged off by his mother mid-performance; second, the Phantom Five consists mostly of students who have their own responsibilities; third, Ciel has achieved what he wanted with the Phantom Five.[533]

Sebastian announces that Ciel's carriage is ready. While going down a hallway, Ciel and Sebastian are approached by Agni, who, upon receiving confirmation from Ciel that Funtom Music Hall has triggered the incident where Sphere Music Hall killed a person, asks Ciel to stop involving Soma in dangerous matters, for, in his perspective, Soma has indirectly taken part in a murder. Ciel states that he will stop putting them both to use, and that he has never considered Soma a friend. He adds that he tends to use all the pawns he has at his disposal, and that if Agni does not like that, he is free to leave and return to India.[534]

Later, Ciel and Sebastian confront Herman, Edgar, and Lawrence, who are hiding at a pub in Hyde Park. He claims that he knows a place for them, hinting toward prison, and comments that it is pitiful for the once popular S4 to be hiding in a pub. Ciel, then, presses them for the whereabouts of Blavat and Elizabeth, and learns that they were not aware that Elizabeth was at Sphere Music Hall in the first place, nor were they aware of the blood transfusions. When Herman mentions Gregory's disappearance, which occurred on the day the Sphere Music Hall scoop was published, Sebastian says that Gregory has Sirius blood, and that it is likely Blavat took him along to continue taking blood from him.[535]

When Ciel asks them if they have an idea where Blavat went, Edgar recalls that Blavat talked about a second music hall being built, and Lawrence declares that it is in Bath. Ciel and Sebastian head out; Lawrence calls for Ciel, but is ignored.[536]

At Bath, Ciel remarks that he has only been there once before to convalesce with his family. He and Sebastian ask a couple of residents for the location of a music hall under construction, and they point the way.[537]

Subsequently, Ciel and Sebastian enter the aforementioned music hall, and descend hidden stairs to reach the room where Blavat had taken blood from the men. Sebastian recognizes military elite and prominent members of the House of Lords, and Ciel says that they were on Grey's list.[538]

They find Gregory, and wake him. When questioned by Sebastian, Gregory admits that he did not want his friends to be sad, and, therefore, he went along with Blavat's plans. He also admits, while crying, that he had invited Cheslock and the others to Sphere Music Hall, in hopes that word might eventually reach Ciel, so that Ciel would come and end it all, because he could not bring himself to do it. When Ciel asks him where Blavat is, he says that Blavat has gone back to London, and then faints.[539]

Ciel orders Sebastian to bring Gregory to a hospital immediately, but Grelle Sutcliff and Othello arrive; both Grim Reapers assert that Gregory will be fine, since he is not on the soul retrieval list. To Ciel's irritation, Othello gathers samples from him. When Grelle tells Sebastian that he should ask them out on a date, Ciel and Sebastian pointedly disregard them.[540]

Othello observes that the machines there have been constructed using "unbelievably" advanced technology, which piques Ciel's interest. Othello reveals that the men there were all suffering from renal failure; the machines were used to replaced the men's thickened blood with fresh blood, and, as a result, their lifespans were considerably extended. When Ciel concludes that that must be the reason why Sphere Music Hall was collecting blood, Othello shows him the soul retrieval list, on which the men's death day entries have been overwritten.[541]

Othello affirms that entries may be revised every once in a while, especially when there are external factors, such as a demon, interfering with the affairs of humans. He says that while the people who summon demons are usually ordinary, sometimes a brilliant inventor is among them, which would explain the machines. Ciel and Sebastian, then, leave for London to track down Blavat.[542]

Ciel tells Sebastian to inform Fred, Grey, and Phipps about the Bath music hall and Gregory's whereabouts. They puzzle over why Blavat has returned to London, despite the risk of being apprehended. When Ciel mentions Elizabeth, Sebastian reveals that, during their previous encounter, she has said, "I, and only I, simply can't go back over there." While Sebastian prepares the carriage, Ciel muses on Elizabeth's cryptic words.[543]

Later, Ciel and Sebastian arrive at the townhouse, where Sebastian notices that something is amiss. They enter the house, and are astonished to find blood and rubble. They follow the trail of blood, and discover Agni at the door, with a multitude of knives in his back. After examining Agni, Sebastian reports to Ciel that he is not breathing, to Ciel's shock. Sebastian, then, breaks open the door, to a room where Soma is, and sets Agni down.[544]

When Ciel asks Soma if he is hurt, Soma hits him across the face. After rendering Soma unconscious, Sebastian comments that Soma is understandably confused. A distraught Ciel, seeing Agni's corpse and the state Soma is in, says that he told Soma and Agni to stay out of his business.[545]

Then, Ciel composes himself, asserts that he wants an assessment of the situation, and suggests that they do a sweep of the place. They note that Agni must have been topping up the coal in the hearth, and that none of the rooms have been burglarized. Subsequently, they hear a strange noise coming from Ciel's room, and enter it.[546]

To their shock, the words "Who stole the candy from my tummy?" are engraved on the wall. Ciel is deeply agitated by the words, but does not address it, instead ordering Sebastian to have Sieglinde tend to Soma's injuries.[547]

When Sebastian lifts Soma, Ciel spots pieces of a photo falling from his hand. Upon realizing what they are, Ciel asks Sebastian for confirmation that he would never lie to him. Sebastian assures him that he does not tell lies, and Ciel is horrified.[548]

Ciel and Sebastian drop off Soma at Sieglinde's place for her to tend to his injuries. Ciel warns Sieglinde to not carelessly open the door for anyone, even if it is him. Afterward, Ciel and Sebastian decide to head to Phantomhive Manor, as Ciel wants to be "certain" about a matter.[549]

Later, Ciel and Sebastian enter Phantomhive Manor, where Mey-Rin, Baldroy, Finnian, and Snake greet Ciel. Ciel is confused when Baldroy asks him why he went out "again" in the rain.[550]

At that moment, "Ciel Phantomhive" descends the stairs, to their collective shock. He scolds a dismayed Ciel for getting drenched, and assures him that he will never leave his side again, and that he has come home. When Finnian states that it is impossible for there to be two Ciels, "Ciel" asserts that he is real. Finnian adds that he knew something was wrong when "Ciel" came home, and calls him an impostor. Amused, "Ciel" declares that the head of the Phantomhive house, Ciel Phantomhive, is actually he.[551]

Blue Memory Arc

"Ciel" chides Ciel for confusing the servants by impersonating him. He adds that Tanaka told him that he used losing everything in the fire as an opportunity to hide the fact that he was a twin and calls Ciel a naughty boy for doing so. Ciel is hesitant when "Ciel" asks him why he made such an outrageous lie and states that he will not be angry with him. Ciel, then, mutters that he is "the spare" to "Ciel Phantomhive", heir to Earl Phantomhive.[552]

Ciel recalls his past. "Ciel" laughs, promises not to scold him for his lies, and states that he is back. Ciel shakes, certain that he has seen "Ciel" die with his own eyes. Sebastian tells "Ciel" he would not be there, if "Ciel" had not lost his life that night. Undertaker arrives, and reveals that he rescued "Ciel"'s body from the fire that night because he would not be able to restore him, if he were burnt to ashes. When Sebastian questions his motives, Undertaker admits that he cannot bear to lose another Phantomhive.[553]

When Sebastian questions Undertaker, "Ciel" tells him that he should not speak without permission from his master. Ciel is unnerved when "Ciel", suddenly cheerful, tells him that he is glad to be reunited with his family.[554]

Ciel opines that resurrecting the dead is madness, to which Undertaker replies that whether or not "Ciel" is alive should not matter because he should be happy to see his elder brother. Undertaker then parades "Ciel", whom he rescued from the fire at the cathedral and whom he refined through trial and error, as his finest creation.[555]

When Ciel asks where "Ciel" was all along, "Ciel" reveals that he has always been by Ciel's side: "Ciel" was inside the coffin Ciel sat on when the latter visited Undertaker's funeral parlor to inquire into the Jack the Ripper incident; Undertaker had "Ciel" watch from afar on a cliff when Ciel and Sebastian walked out of the burning Kelvin Manor; "Ciel" was in one of the many coffins stowed in the deck of the Campania, where he bit Undertaker; "Ciel" was concealed under Johann Agares's cloak as he watched Ciel play cricket at Weston College. Ciel is disturbed by the revelation.[556]

Grelle crashes through the window, to their collective surprise, while Othello walks through the door. They target Undertaker, intent on apprehending him.[557] After Undertaker and Othello taunt each other, Othello tosses his Death Scythe, but to no effect since he is physically weak, to the astonishment of Ciel, Sebastian, and Grell and to the amusement of Undertaker.[558] Grelle, Undertaker, and Sebastian proceed to battle.[559]

Abruptly, Scotland Yard, helmed by Fred, who is accompanied by Edward and Alexis burst inside, having received an an anonymous report detailing that Blavat, the mastermind of the Sphere Music Hall serial murders, and his conspirators are hiding at the manor.[560]

Fred, Edward, and Alexis are shocked to see the twins. "Ciel" tells Alexis that Ciel has been posing as him. Elizabeth steps out and affirms "Ciel"'s statement, adding that Ciel has been lying all along. Ciel is discomposed.[561] Alexis demands explanations, and "Ciel" agrees to provide them, but Ciel is reluctant.[562]

A Scotland Yard officer reports to Fred that they have found a stash of blood vials in the cellar identical to the ones seized at Sphere Music Hall. Another Scotland Yard officer reports that they have apprehended Blavat.[563]

Ciel mulls over the situation and determines that Sirius, the Blue Star and the cult leader of Sphere Music Hall, which was illegally harvesting blood, is "Ciel". When questioned by Fred, Blavat identifies Ciel as Lord Sirius. Sebastian warns Ciel that he has been set up by "Ciel". Edward and Fred are unable to defend Ciel. An officer points out that Ciel is also being charged with identity theft. Fred is compelled to arrest Ciel, the prime suspect in the Sphere Music Hall serial murders.[564]

Ciel acquiesces in his arrest. He, Sebastian, and Blavat are whisked away on a police carriage, after Sebastian tells the Phantomhive servants, bar Tanaka, to collect their pay later.[565]

Ciel sits in silence for the entirety of the ride while Sebastian and Blavat taunt each other. The Phantomhive servants work in conjunction to derail the carriage.[566] Afterward, Sebastian carries Ciel out of the woods, where they meet with the Phantomhive servants, who have arrived on a wagon to "pick up their wages."[567]

Now as fugitives, the Phantomhive household visits the Funtom Corporation headquarters in hopes of taking refuge there. Finnian explores the shop while undercover and reports that Scotland Yard officers have been stationed at the shop. Ciel reasons that such is due to Arthur Randall's eagerness to eliminate them. They consider leaving England.[568]

When an officer spots them, they dash to Pitt's Lark Photographic Studio, with Finnian carrying Ciel. Inside, Pitt takes a picture of them with the intention of selling it later for a hefty sum and leads them to the sewers, where he supplies them with necessities for their journey and agrees to send telegrams to Chlaus and Diedrich.[569]

When Scotland Yard is about to catch up to them, the ceiling collapses, blocking their path. Emerging from the smoke are Lau and Ran-Mao, who has broken the ceiling.[570] Initially, Ciel and Sebastian assume that Lau is cooperating with Scotland Yard to claim the bounty placed on Ciel. However, Lau assists them in their escape and escorts them to one of his opium dens, where they are accommodated with a bath, a change of clothing, and a meal.[571]

Later, the Phantomhive household, dressed in Chinese clothing, is served a luxurious meal consisting of Chinese dishes. Sebastian explains their circumstances and reveals that they may head to Diedrich in Germany. Lau suggests that they run away and start a new life at a country where they are not known, such as India or China. Ran-Mao urges Ciel to eat on the side.[572]

Ciel stands up suddenly and stuffs himself, to the astonishment of all and to the disgust of Ran-Mao. He rages about "Ciel"'s inauspicious return and the betrayal of others, and he declares himself the rightful Watchdog and Earl of Phantomhive, as he has fulfilled all the duties of such. Lau applauds him, stating that this earl is whom he has partnered with for business. Ciel asserts that he will fight "Ciel" and reclaim his estate, his manor, and the title of "Earl Ciel Phantomhive." Sebastian remarks that Ciel's table manners are a "travesty."[573]

Blue Revenge Arc

Subsequently, Lau assigns them work at the den. He commends Sebastian's performance, but is disappointed with Ciel, who, while serving customers, bungles the task and refuses to wear women's clothing. When Ciel says that he will not stay in the "cave" forever and Sebastian agrees that the den is unsuitable for an earl, Lau admits that he would also like for Ciel to regain his title, or else his business might suffer. They settle in the private meeting room to discuss the situation.[574]

Lau reads the newspapers, which paint Ciel as the perpetrator of the Sphere Music Hall crimes and an impostor who stole "Ciel"'s inheritance and which feature the picture Pitt took of them and sold thereafter. When Lau suggests that Ciel infiltrate the manor and kill "Ciel", Ciel reveals that "Ciel" has a "troublesome private warrior" protecting him. Ciel then states that he believes "Ciel" is an upgraded Bizarre Doll, to which Sebastian agrees. He also states that, taking into account the fact that Bizarre Dolls require copious amounts of blood in order to function, "Ciel" must require the same, but, with Sphere Music Hall forcibly shut down, "Ciel" must have arranged for alternative sources to obtain blood. Ciel proclaims that, to avoid the chances of running into Scotland Yard and further damaging his reputation, as well as the chances of "Ciel" and Undertaking escaping, he will first root out and eliminate "Ciel"'s lifelines before confronting "Ciel" himself. He orders Lau and Sebastian to gather information. When Lau says "Yes, my Lord" alongside Sebastian, both Ciel and Sebastian are surprised. Lau confesses that he has always wanted to say it at least once, and Ciel berates him.[575]

Later, Lau and Sebastian report their abundant findings to Ciel, but not a single one provides conclusive evidence. When Lau mentions Karnstein Hospital, Ciel recalls the Aurora Society and has Sebastian comb through the information collected and flag anything in which Aurora Society members play key roles. Sometime afterward, Sebastian presents his findings, having flagged four locations.[576]

Ciel determines that striking all the facilities for collecting blood at once while "Ciel" has not yet caught on to what he is planning to do would be the best option. Ciel has Sebastian assemble the group, which is divided into pairs to tackle each location: Ciel and Sebastian will investigate the new resort hotel in Brighton. Ciel orders them to immediately retreat and return to the opium den if there is no evidence of blood collection; however, if the evidence exists, they must dismantle the operation.[577]

During their meeting, Ciel, Sebastian, and Lau determine that they must immediately leave the opium den in the Limehouse District—as well as London in general—since Arthur is aware of the ties between Ciel and Lau; and that the most discreet method of escape would be via boat on the River Thames, after which they would travel by train.[578]

Ciel and the others disguised as "flowers" on a boat.

Lau has Ciel, Sebastian, Baldroy, Finnian, Mey-Rin, and Snake wear hair ornaments before they, along with Ran-Mao, leave. While the group is journeying by boat, they are accosted by the Scotland Yard's Thames Division, which monitors the River Thames. The officers demand to see Lau and Ran-Mao's cargo, as part of their London-wide investigation for Ciel. Lau informs them that he is delivering "flowers," or girls, to his clients, and bribes them. Afterward, the officers allow them to pass.[579]

At the Reading Railway Station, the group divides, with Ciel and Sebastian boarding a train together.[580]

  • "Children are greedy when it comes to games."[581]
  • "I've long since forgotten... how to smile... joyfully."[582]
  • (To Sebastian Michaelis) "That ring has seen the demise of its master many times. My grandfather's... my father's... and... and without fail, this ring will bear witness to my death as well."[583]
  • "This game wasn't all that interesting either."[584]
  • (To Angelina Dalles) "He is both my 'might' and my 'hands and feet.' Sebastian is but a 'chessman.' And only I, the 'horseman,' can move the 'horse.' If I were to defeat my opponent with an 'automaton of a chessman,' the achievement could not be considered 'my own.' I always give the orders . . . and without them, he has been disciplined to move not so much as a muscle. However, you might say the sole difference between Sebastian and this 'knight' is . . . that he is a 'knight' who can move to any square in one fell swoop."[585]
  • "But this world is no chess game, where one cannot win if not playing by the rules. Without fail, players will break the rules . . . and chessmen will betray the players. And if I'm to play games with their like on equal footing, I'd have no chance at victory if I didn't break the rules myself, right? On this chessboard of Great Britain that we call our home, letting one's guard down immediately amounts to . . . checkmate."[586]
  • "I . . . have never once thought to avenge my parents or anything of the sort. Were I to avenge them, the dead would still not come back to life . . . much less to enjoy the sweet taste of revenge. Calling it 'vengeance' or a 'battle of revenge' is just glossing over the truth. Such utterances amount to nothing more than the selfishness of the survivors, after all . . . a luxury of living, wouldn't you say? I . . . did not return to Phantomhive for the sake of the previous head. I returned for myself. All I want is to give those who betrayed and defiled the name of Phantomhive . . . a taste of the humiliation . . . and pain . . . that I suffered. Checkmate."[587]
  • (To Sebastian Michaelis) "I command you. Do not betray me. Always stay by my side... no matter what!"[588]
  • "I'm not very good at losing any kind of game."[589]
  • (To Soma Asman Kadar) "My... family was murdered, my home burned to ash... and I myself was subjected to humiliations unfit for even a beast. I was a powerless... child. Thus, I returned to Phantomhive, so that I might inflict the same humiliation upon those who made me and mine suffer. If Phantomhive was an obstacle to those who dispatched its previous head three years ago, they will eventually target me again if I stay on as Earl. I'm waiting... for them to come here and make an attempt on my life."[590]
  • (To Soma Asman Kadar) "Despairing, grieving, standing still... What good will they do? Even the dead can stand still. But here I am... alive and standing on my own two feet, with my own strength. If I'm going to die at some point anyway, I'd rather do so without regrets. I won't make any lofty claims about trying to avenge the previous head. I'm simply doing this for my own diversion. Them or me, Earl Phantomhive. This is all just a game to see who wins. Even if I'm made to stand on the edge of despair in a hellish place... I won't give up. I'll grab the spider's thread if it'll help me crawl up out of there. We humans possess that kind of strength. To grab that thread or not, however... is your own decision, and yours alone."[591]
  • "Your idea of sport is in such bad taste, it fair makes me retch... you devil!"[592]
  • (To Soma Asman Kadar) "Who's my best friend again? Don't joke with me."[593]
  • (To Joker) "You did the right thing. You fought to protect your own world. There's nothing wrong with that. After all, the justice in this world is a sham created by those in power for themselves. No one gives a damn about anyone else. If you're careless, you're sure to lose. To begin with, only two kinds of humans have ever existed in this world. Those who rob, and those who are robbed. And today... I shall rob you and your allies of your futures."[594]
